23rd October 2014

A week had passed since Emily's encounter with Matty and she couldn't forget it even if she tried. While she hadn't been waiting for him to come back, because that would be sad, she couldn't help but feel slightly disappointed when the shop door opened and it wasn't him.

Emily was half way through making a venti hot chocolate, no marshmallows or cream, when she glanced at the clock hanging on the wall in front of her.

1:25pm. Only five minuets until her scheduled break although by the look of the ever growing queue in front of her it wasn't likely she was going to get her break.

"No it's fine love, I'll wait until she's finished"

If Emily wasn't concentrating so hard on not spilling any of the boiling hot liquid from the cup as she stirred it she'd have choked.

The mancunian accent was one that was impossible to forget and she tried her hardest not to look in the direction it came from as she handed the hot chocolate to her grateful customer and turned back to the queue.

"I hoped I'd see you here again" Matty grinned as he leaned his elbows on the counter in front of him.

"Well it's you're lucky day then. What can I get you?"

"Well I was hoping you'd sit and drink with me"

What? Was Emily hearing this stranger correctly? He wanted her to sit with him and drink coffee. Was she in a cliché romantic movie right now?

"Well I was just about to have my break but-"

"Great!" Matty all but shouted as he cut Emily off mid excuse. "I'll have one of those latte things and then what ever you're having"

"Well technically I don't have to pay for any drinks I have"

"Oh just shut up and let me be a gentleman" Matty smirked as he placed a ten pound note on the counter and wondered off to find two empty seats.

Two lattes and a cheese toastie later the pair sat at a small table placed against the glass window, looking out onto the street laughing at something witty Matty had said.

"Why did you want to sit with me?" Emily had suddenly become curious as to what made Matty come back. Was it just to see her? Or had he converted to a regular coffee drinker?

Matty seemed taken aback by her abrupt question as his eyes widened slightly and he let out a small cough.

"Well your latte was so nice I couldn't help but come back for more" he smiles innocently but Emily couldn't help but feel like he was far from innocent.

"So" Matty leant forward and squinted his eyes slightly to read the name tag pinned on Emily's chest. "Emily, what's a beautiful girl like you doing cooped up in a tiny shop like this?" He continued leaning back in his chair.

It was Emily's turn to be taken aback by his question as she felt her face getting hot and had no doubt her cheeks were flushing red. She cleared her throat and scolded herself for letting Matty get in her head already.

"I um. I go to Queen Mary and study English Literature. This is just a um Saturday job."

God why did this boy make her so nervous.

"What about you?"

"What about me?"

"What do you do?"

Matty hated this question because he hated lying and there was no way he could tell the truth. Usually he just went with the "currently unemployed but looking for a job" option but it felt wrong to tell such a lie to this girl he'd only just met and he didn't know why.
