Alec’s POV

Early the next morning I was startled out of sleep by an insistent beeping coming from the bedside table. Kellen was comfortably sprawled out half on top of me and half on the bed. He was mumbling something incoherent into my neck and waving one arm towards the nightstand trying to convey his irritation without actually opening his mouth. Sharing his feelings I quickly fumbled around with my phone until the noise finally stopped. Kellen let out an appreciative groan and proceeded to nestle himself further into the covers, and me.

Strangely enough this didn’t bother me. I had been worried that it would have, even though it’s become routine for Kellen and I to share a bed however I had been wrong. Without the constant feeling of those around us trying to put labels on what Kellen and I were, which of course was just friends. Besides, this was  familiar, it was common ground. In the fourteen years we’d known each other Kellen and I had constructed a perfectly oiled morning routine. The alarm clock would ring a full hour before we even needed to begin getting ready for school to allow us time to take my god, Corie, out for a walk. I would always tell Kellen that he was free to stay behind but he would roll his eyes and get out of bed sending me a ‘are you stupid of course I’m coming’ look. And just as predicted moments later Corie could be heard pawing at the door and making loud whining sounds to try to wake us up.

“Do we have to?” Kellen mumbled into my neck, tightening his previously loose hold on me.

“You don’t, but I have to,” I replied trying to pry him off gently. I couldn’t help briefly wondering if Kellen was saying this because he wanted to avoid being out in public with me. It made sense, as we would have to act like we were a couple, so I wouldn’t hold it against him if he did but the thought still stung a little. My worries were soon crushed however when Kellen snorted, rolled his eyes at me and proceeded to climb out of the bed.

His blonde hair was an absolute mess, not that he could ever tame it but it was particularly bad in the morning. Even after all these years it still took quite a bit of restraint no to laugh at it. He was wearing a pair of [my] superman boxers and was currently rummaging through [again my] clothing to find something to wear. He was so skinny you could see the outline of his ribs and was a full head smaller than me so when he finally settled for a pair of jeans and a sweatshirt they hung off of him almost comically. The jeans fit alright, I supposed, but the sweater was almost twice his size.

“You need to eat more.”

“And you need to get out of bed,” Kellen shot back quickly while busily hunting for Corie’s leash. Upon finding it he finally let the still whining dog into the room. The rather large husky proceeded to jump all over him and then me in a flurry of quick movements, almost knocking Kellen over and successfully pushing me out of the bed.

“Good dog,” Kellen mumbled under his breath when she made his way back over to him. “Are you planning on getting ready any time soon, because we are.”

“I’m ready, I’m ready,” I answered pulling on a pair of jeans and a black t-shirt, grabbing the leash from Kellen and running out of the front door. When I finally slowed down to a walk it took Kellen a full three minutes to catch up to me, and when he did he was panting.

“I hate running, you’re horrible. Corie, knock him over!” she whined at him and tilted her head to the side, choosing to ignore the command the dog kept merrily walking along. I laughed.

“What’s with you and making me exercise? That’s your thing not mine!” Kellen commented, hooking his arm through mine and slowing my quick pace to his leisurely one. Once we had slowed Kellen didn’t movie away and I didn’t really mind. “I think you need to make it up to me,” I knew better than to argue with that.
