Chapter Four, teaser. ✌

He chuckled at me as I ate another piece of sushi.
"Hopefully you're not always in space," Ben picked up a piece of sushi with his chopsticks as he half-joked. "So what's got you wanting to be a lawyer, of all things?" My eyes lit up. Don't say the first thing that comes to mind, Avery. Easy.
"Well honestly in my life there's been people taken from me by the hands of the law, where the law should have no power," his eyebrows raised as I spoke. Well that didn't come out right. I finished chewing and sat up straight. "You see, growing up in Southern California has its ticks. Well, you have the drug addicts, pill heads, and the alcoholics. And they're getting thrown in jail for their own choices. Things like assault with a deadly weapon, murder, battery, disorderly conduct." He lays his hands over one another and clears his throat.
"Yes but what does that have to do with you?" His doubting eyes ignited a little barrel of passion inside of me.
"Well, those people deserve to be thrown in jail, right? What about the patients who use their medicine as they're supposed to? Or those who get drunk in the privacy of their own home to take a load off? Do you think they should be thrown in jail for consuming legal substance?"
"Well no I-"
"Exactly. My point exactly, so can you tell me what right does a policeman have to enter a home based on a claim he heard from a neighbor that someone in their own home is taking medication. Or that someone in their own home is deciding to have a little bit of a drink to take a load off?" I pause to sip my drink but hold up a finger to him to signal I'm not done. "None, right?"
He smiled and his cheeks pinkened. "Well no, I can't argue with that."
"So can you tell me why in a state that Marijuana is medicinally available, prescribed, and sold to those that doctors- trained doctors, say could benefit them; can police come in and take the one thing from these people that actually works, and arrest those consuming medication in public?"
