Chapter 3

The next morning, I was woken up by loud rustling and shifting. I cracked an eye open to see Elric trying to shove cow meat into his bulging pack. I chuckled softly, and laughed louder when he jumped at the sudden noise.

" Well ha ha! A bit of warning would be nice." He grumbled.

"May I ask how you became a soldier again?" I joked. He hmphed and slung the bag over his shoulder. I watches, amused as he grunted and then promptly began to topple to one side. I leaded up to him so he wouldn't fall over and he mutter his thanks.

"So shall we depart then Mr. Elric?" I asked, walking to the door.

"If you are using Mr., it should be Mr. O' Conner,  but there is no need for formalities. You may call me Elric, Aella." He said following me outside.

"Very well. So do you have any idea where we are going?" I asked as we climbed up the hill.

"Nope, I haven't a clue." He said cheerily. I snorted.

            "Well that's helpful."

"Actually," He started, pulling out a map from his pocket. "This town is a day or so journey from here. Perhaps there's something there." He pointed to the small black dot.

"I suppose that's a start." I eyed him warily as he stuffed the map back into his pocket.

"Well yeah, everyone's got to start somewhere right?" My goodness, was this guy always so cheerful. I shrugged in response and we continued to head towards the small nameless town.

About two hours passed and my feet were beginning to ache. I had never walked so much in my life. That and I had somehow managed to step on every jagged rock on the path. Even with my scaled feet, I could feel the sharp pricks of the pebbles.

I peered at Elric and could tell he was tired as well, though not nearly as much as I was. His breath was coming out in soft pants, but he hadn't complained yet. How odd, I thought to myself. I pegged him as a whiner.

After another hour of walking, I couldn't take it anymore. It was so painful, I wouldn't be surprised if my feet were bleeding. "Elric, can we stop and rest for the night?" I asked wearily.

He grunted and set his pack down. "Very well." I practically collapsed on the ground. "You don't get out much do you?"

"Oh, yes because that wasn't at all implied when I said I had never left the castle." I muttered sarcastically.

"Oh, touchy touchy." He chuckled. I bared my teeth slightly and grumbled. He said nothing as he took out two mats and built a fire pit."Aella, if you would." he asked politely. I spurted a small jet of fire to light the wood. HE grunted, which I had discovered was a man's way to show thanks or gratitude.

Elric pulled out some jerky and began to gnaw on it. I simply stares at the fire, not knowing what to say. Maybe we could talk about travel plans?

"Hey Elric."I looked up and saw him sitting there with his eyes closed. I got up and sat myself town in front of him. I poked his forehead lightly and he didn't move. Wow, he was asleep.

I studied his peaceful face and decided to lay him down on the mat. Who in their right mind falls asleep sitting up. I jabbed him one more time. I hope he's still alive. I looked and saw his chest rise and fall slowly. Yep, still alive. I shrugged and went and laid down on my mat.

I must admit, this soldier intrigued me. He was the one human that didn't run and hide, or try to cut my head off the minute they saw me. He was the only one who really stopped to hear what I had to say. I glanced at his sleeping from and then back at the setting sun. I soon felt my bones shift and knew that my flesh had returned.

I leaned back to look at the moon. I had practically memorized what it looked like. Every crater on the face of that moon had a story. I wonder what it would be like to witness a meteor shower like the one that shaped the way the moon is.

Maybe that's what life's like. An endless number of meteor showers that shaped the way you are as a person. Maybe everything happens for a reason. We shouldn't ever want to change the past, I believe. Because that makes us who we are in the present and the future.

A/N: Sorry for the lack of updates for anyone who finds any interest in my story. I have a lot of work, juggling so many high school honors and online classes, it has me swamped. Plus I have to read 1984, which is a weird, yet intriguing book. I recommend it if you like weirdness. Like me! Ahaha. Anyway, Feedback is appreciated!
