Volunteering At The Animal Shelter

On Saturdays I usually volunteer at the animal shelter, if I'm not out of town. I enjoy spending time with the animals there, knowing I can genuinely make a difference in their lives. Some of their stories are cruel, with awful owners abusing them.

It makes me so happy every time I see a dog or cat come to our shelter and start gaining weight again, slowly becoming accustomed to affectionate humans like my colleagues and I, leaving their heartbreaking past behind little by little.

Today me and Tony were both supposed to be working at the shelter, but he caught a cold so it's up to me to keep the place running for the next 4 hours. My normal day goes on, feeding and bathing puppies and kittens, as well as giving medicine and shots to the older dogs. Sometimes people come in looking to adopt animals or even journalists doing a report on shelters in our area, but usually it's just me making sure everything is OK.

At about 3PM I hear the entrance bell ring, which is weird because we don't have any visitations scheduled for today. From behind the front desk I see a young woman, about 30-40 years old, walk in with two boys, twins. They flash two identical bright-white smiles, and jump up and down excitedly, hugging each other and their mom as well.

"Hello and welcome to the animal shelter, how may I help you?"
