Authors Note: Well hi guys..... Got nothing batter to do, so I'm posting the next chapter! Thank you EcthelionofGondolin for letting me steal her OC Malgel for my book. He's introduce down yonder. 👇
The following morning, the sun was beginning to rise, giving the forest a grey, dim light. Beneath the foliage of the black trees, a thin, silhouetted figure sat on a low, weak branch. His blonde hair was untamed as it danced freely in the soft, crisp wind, and his pale face was covered in dark smudges. As another breeze hit him, the cold made his bright red cheeks flush with color. Everything was silent as always, nothing moved, nothing made noise. Nothing seemed to happened anymore. Everything was simply.... dead. Suddenly, a fair, musical voice broke the silence as another silver haired -fair of face- elf sat beside him.
"Legolas! How's watch? Anything interesting? Anything interesting at all?" Malgel asked his tone voicing the youths boredom and exasperation as he plopped himself down beside his best friend.
Legolas turned his head to look at the silver haired Ellon, and let his lips rise up into a half smile. "Well, if you like cheery days. Then this is quite thrilling." The woodland prince answered sarcastically, resting his chin back down against his knees and hugging his legs closer to his chest.
"Legolas, if you call this a cheery day then you clearly have already lost it." The silver haired Silvan said cockily as he grinned at his friend. "Though I am not quite sure that you had it when this all started."
Legolas turned his gaze to his friend once more and let a exasperated look cross his features. "Well, in my defense. You've never had it since they day you were born." The former prince teased, letting another small smile crawl up his features.
Malgel looked back at him, a hurtful expression plastered on his face and he gasped loudly. "Me?! Me not having it, you've never had it!" The youth exclaimed, letting a bright chuckle escape his lips. Legolas actually thought that he had lost his sanity, he had known the prince his whole life. When it came to sanity, the blonde Silvan never had it, the young guard thought and he grinned at his friend.
Legolas looked at him and frowned. What could be going through his silly little head? The prince thought and scooted away when Malgel kept grinning, his big, green eyes widening to the size of teacups.
"Stop. You're freaking me out. It's not flattering."
"Me? Not flattering? Legoals, look at yourself. You're hideous. If one of us isn't flattering its you." The green eyes elf said and began to poke at the mess of Legolas's blonde hair, attempting to fix it, but purposely messed it up further.
Legolas reached up and smacked his hand away, before grumbling softly to himself about not having time to keep up his appearance. And how in this time of events, your looks were a last priority.
"I've left the prince speechless. Someone record this." Malgel said dryly, looking around as if talking to someone unseen. He leaned casually back, his earlier words earning a grunt of response from the other elf.
They lapsed into silence, and the two sat comfortably, enjoying the moment of just being able to have a conversation. A normal banter. Something they hadn't done in a long time. That was a luxury they rarely had.
After a moment, and as the once casual quiet became tense, Legolas sighed and turned towards his friend. "Do you think this is hopeless? Actually trying to survive and all. We are all going to die someway or another." The prince said helplessly, the mood dropping to a depressing tone.
Malgel took time to consider his friends words, before speaking slowly. "No. I do not think it's hopeless." The youth began as he shifted forward, turning towards Legolas. "Yes, we might die, but we can still do whatever we can before we keel over." The warrior grinned brightly, doing his best to lighten the mood.
"I guess you're right.... But we've lost everything.... Is it even worth continuing?" The prince asked in a small voice, cupping his cheeks in his hands.
Malgel took another moment to ponder his friends words, wisely considering what to say. What could he say that would cheer his prince up? What could have possibly say that would mean anything? He then sighed, and ran a single hand through his silver hair. "Legolas.... We did loose everything, but that doesn't mean we can't continue, and it doesn't mean that we have to give up. We have hope, even if it's hard to see." The silver haired warrior said as he shifted his position. " Hope.... Sometimes it's all you have, when you have nothing else. It's the one thing that survives even the hottest fire. Or the most dire of circumstances. If you have it, you have everything, even if it's small. Hope is very hard to kill, but only when you can believe it's still there."
Legolas paused, hesitantly thinking over his friends words. It was definitely reassuring, more than he'd hoped. Hope. Maybe he did have it. Maybe Malgel spoke the truth. However, he wasn't so sure he would be able to actually see the hope. Not the kind that Malgel was speaking of. The prince twisted his already messy blonde locks in thought.
You'll get split ends if you keep that up, Malgel thought with a rueful smile, and he chuckled, waiting for the princes response.
"Malgel, what hope is left? What is there left to hope in?" The prince asked, closing his icy blue eyes and trying not to look around. The ruins of the once beautiful land were only making his thought process more dour.
Malgel shook his silver head and breathed softly as he looked around the black forest. "Legolas.... I can't tell you that. We all have individual hopes. You just have to find something or someone to place your hope in."
The two sat in silence once more, not bothering to make a sound as the morning progressed into evening. The already chilled air was giving a sharper bite as the winds increased. They shivered and curled tightly in on themselves. It was freezing, their malnourished bodies doing nothing to fight the winds.
A/N: Eh, sorry the chapters are so short. I hope you liked it? Yeah? Nah? *shrugs*
