The night of her 12th birthday her uncle went out with his friends and got drunk like always, and usually he takes a cab home but this time he chose to go with a friend that he didn't know was drunk.
Then suddenly outside the house the girl heard a huge CRASH, as soon as she heard the crashing noise she knew to call 911 even if she didn't know what happened or if someone was hurt.
Once the ambulance arrived the paramedics told the girl that her uncle died in the car and one other friend as well, but the driver survived.
The girl lied and told them her mom was sleeping but really she was all-alone in an empty house.
She eventually had to handle going to school, cooking, working and grocery shopping to take care of herself, with a little help from her English teacher.
Because he almost went through the same thing when he was young so he felt some responsibility to help the girl. With his help she could pay the bills and buy groceries. He would also drive her to her part-time job or school if she missed the bus. He ended up being the only role model the girl had around, so she would always know that if she needed help she could just contact him.
