Nicholas Caldwell was laying in the dewy grass outside of his and his mother's cottage. The cottage sat in the middle of a large wood and no houses were anywhere to be seen. There of course would be the occasional hunter or two, who came for the abnormally large bucks that were only found in Denton, Nevada.
Nicholas wasn't supposed to be outside when his mother wasn't home. The woods were usually completely deserted, and there were no wild animals there. However, his mother had insisted that he stay inside, but Nicholas didn't listen. Everyday, when his mother left for work, he would run outside and collapse on the ground to watch the clouds, or climb a tree and pretend he was Tarzan. His mother also nagged him about never taking off his glasses, for his vision was very poor. He had worn glasses ever since he could remember. In fact, he never remembered taking them off. His mother made him keep them on at night in case he needs to use the bathroom or get a drink of water, so he wouldn't have to try to found his glasses in the dark.
As he lay, watching the clouds, he noticed something out of the corner of his eye. He looked in that direction but the thing had disappeared. He assumed it was just his mind playing tricks on him so he continued watching the clouds.
He slowly drifted off, but woke with a start when he heard the snap of a twig. He looked toward the noise as he got up on his knees. There, reflected against the side of the house, was a shadow without an owner.
