We were all sitting down at the table for dinner when Hikaru and Aya burst out of the kitchen with some dinner. It had been a while since I'd had a family dinner. Outside, one of Sunakagure's sand storms was raging.
Next to me on my right sat Kakashi, and on my left sat little Kaara, and she'd already grown quite fond of me.
'Auntie Emi, awe you weally my Mommy's sister? And awe you weally my Auntie?' She asked looking up at me with big brown eyes.
I nodded and gave her a closed eyed smile.
'Yes! I am definitely your Momma's sister and most definitely your Auntie,' I smiled. We were all talking when I glanced to see if Kakashi had eaten any of his food. I was surprised to see that it was all gone and he was casually sitting there with his arms folded across his chest. I blinked, he really did live up to the name ninja if he could eat all his food without revealing his face, and none of us even noticed him eating at all!
After dinner, Aya had us all sit down and talk. We talked about some of the times that we should have spent together, some of the times that we'd missed, what we'd learnt and how far we'd come. Aya had by far beaten me with the ninja training and her skills in this world.
After, Hikaru and Aya put Kaara and Saru to bed, before returning, and then came the goodbyes.
'Emi, why don't you and your husband stay for the night?' she smiled, handing Hikaru some dishes. Kakashi and I both jumped up.
'No! You don't understand Aya, we're not...he's not my....husband!' I exclaimed.
'We're not even together! Just friends,' Kakashi laughed awkwardly. I don't know why, but I felt a pang of pain when he said just friends. If we were just friends, why did he kiss me? Why did I not pull away if we were just friends?
'And besides, we have a place to stay until we go, but thanks Aya, I really appreciate it, honest,' I told her. She laughed and put her good arm around my shoulders.
'Don't worry about it baby sister, as long as you visit tomorrow, I'll let you off,' she chuckled. We said our goodbyes and left for our appartment, braving the sand storm. When we got in, I couldn't help but turn to Kakashi and shout.
'What did you mean back there with all this, just friends crap!?' I yelled, clenching my fists. He looked a bit taken back.
'I've never heard you swear before Emi, let alone say something like "crap"!' he chuckled.
'That's not the point Kakashi!' I yelled again. 'I don't get it, after everything that we've been through, after everything that's happened, you just go and say "We're just friends"?! Seriously, was all that for nothing?! DO I MEAN ANYTHING TO YOU AT ALL?! BECAUSE YOU MEAN A HELL OF A LOT TO ME!' I yelled. Inside, I was kicking myself, what was I doing? Why was I so upset, and why was my heart hurting so much?
'Emi, calm down,' he said quietly. 'You're tired, you've been through a lot today and you're not thinking straight, calm down,'
'NO! WE'RE NOT JUST FRIENDS, WHAT ABOUT THAT KISS?! OR ARE WE?! WHY ARE YOU SUCH A DOUCHE!?' I screamed at him. The poor guy just stood there, looking at me sadly. I balled my fists and stormed towards the door, barging past him. I put my hand on the door handle and turned it, opening the door to the sand storm which had gotten worse. Suddenly, I felt his arms around me, strong and firm, yet gentle.
'I'm not going to lose you again, Emi Funkai,'
My eyes widened and I went weak at the knees, falling back. Kakashi caught me and scooped me up. He closed the door with his shoulder and carried me into my room and set me down on my bed. He pulled off my sandals for me and then he tucked me in, as if I were a kid again. Then, he lay down on my other side, and waited for me to go to sleep. My tired eyes were heavy and wouldn't take no more, so I allowed them to rest, falling into a deep sleep.
---
I woke up the next morning, and found him still laying beside me, but he was still asleep. I watched him for a while, smiling to myself before getting up quietly and grabbing a change of fresh clothes. I left the door half closed and when I had gotten dressed, I quietly opened the front door and went out into Sunakagure.
It was a beautiful morning and all evidence of last night's sand storm was pretty much non-existent. I took a walk through the village, taking mental notes of certain land-marks so I could find my way back. It proved easier than I thought.
I wandered in and out of small stores and shops, picking up bits of materials that I found cool or useful and got some extra tools. On my way back, I stopped off at a small cafe place and took out a kunai from my back, which I'd bought earlier. Using another smaller kunai, I carved off the handle grip and took out my materials.
I began weaving colored threads in and out of each other, the more I did, the more patterns began emerging. I carried on following the patterns until I'd finished the whole hilt. It was covered in colors and one distinctive pattern stood out. The letter "K" stood out in bold colors. I took out some tissue paper I'd found and carefully wrapped up the kunai. Sliding it back into the bag, I took off again, back to our apartment. I found it with little trouble and quietly slid through the door. I was turning around to quietly close the door when I found Kakashi standing by my bedroom doorway, with his arms folded across his chest.
'And where did you sneak off to?' he asked, raising an eyebrow. I smiled and walked in, reaching inside the bag and pulling out the gift.
'I went out to get you something,' I told him, handing it to him carefully. Kakashi looked at me, as if he were unsure of what to do next.
'Go on,' I grinned, stepping back a bit.
He reluctantly began un-wrapping the gift and when it had been un-wrapped, he looked at it a gave me a close eyed smile.
'I'm sorry about my little out-burst last night, I don't know what came over me,' I said, looking down at the floor and scratching my arm a little. It was a few seconds before he lifted my chin up to face him. My eyes widened as he placed his lips onto mine. But it wasn't the kiss that surprised me, although it did, but it was the fact that he'd taken off his mask!
I closed my eyes and kissed him back, my heart was racing. We slowly pulled away, and he didn't put his mask back on. I remember Mom told me it was rude to stare but right now, I couldn't help myself.
His face was god-like! I'd never really had a crush before, nor ever found the guys in my world very attractive, but this was another story.
'I love you, Emi,' he admitted, giving me a close eyed smile. It was an even sweeter smile with his nose and mouth visible.
'I love you too,' I replied, almost immediately.
'So do you think that this means that we're, you know, more than "just friends"?' he chuckled.
'I suppose it does,' I laughed, giving him another kiss.
