Nine Years later

Nadia spent the day in the village square using her charms to earn food to give to her family. Her father had never shown his face in nine years since Jane and Alec were born and the memories she had of him were scarce and disappearing, not that she minded. Jane and Alec had asked their mother about him a few years back and she had lied and said he was a lord of some part of England and they had fallen in love when she was a maid in his household. I never once lied to my siblings as I believed in being truthful and hated when people lied to her and so I told them the truth that he was crude and evil man and that they should hope to never meet him.

I walked bare foot through the square stopping at the well in the middle of the village, I was getting a pail of water to heat up for Jane and I to use for a bath later. I took hold of the pump and pushed the lever up and down as water spilled out into my pail. I looked down at my dirty feet that poked out of the bottom of my simple purple long-sleeved dress. I then looked away and around the square and the people bustling around me. I hardly paid them any mind as most people left me and my family alone.

People found that when they were friendly to her family good luck befell them; but when they were rude or hurt her family in some way disasters struck them. For example a young man a few years older than her had groped her once before she pushed him away and ran from him. The next day he was found dead having climbed up a tree and fallen out. In truth Nadia had wished he would die while she ran from him and was very happy when he was found cold and dead. Many other incidents had happened besides that where people had gotten hurt. It wasn't just people who were rude to her that bad things happened to; it was also Jane and Alec. I didn't really care for the rumors that my family were witches, no one wanted her as a friend and although she would never show it, it really did hurt her emotionally. True I had my younger siblings to talk too but sometimes I wanted a friend who was closer to my age.

I let out a sigh while still filling up my water pail, I looked around and stopped as my eyes set on a lovely red dress that would make Jane very happy to have. Quickly finishing filling up the pail I walked towards the tailor's home and set my water pail down outside. I opened up the doorway and stepped inside ringing the bell along the way. Mr. Franklin's wife Julia came out from the back with a cheery smile on her face that fell slightly on realizing it was me

"Nadia, Hello, how are you today?" Julia asked coming over to me.

"I am well today, thank you." I replied with a small smile. Although Julia's smile did fall when she came in I knew it wasn't because of her personal feelings for me; but her husband and what he might do in seeing me here.

"How may I help you?" Julia asked me.

"That dress near the front, how much for it?" I asked gesturing to the front of the shop.

"Oh that dark red one? I think it might be a bit small for you." Julia replied looking at my 5'6 stature up and down with a kind smile.

I laughed slightly. "Not for me for my sister Jane. She has gone through another growth spurt and her dresses are almost too small for her now."

"Oh silly me, of course. Well that dress is one of our finest pieces. The fabric is from London. It would come to a cost of 30 pounds." Julia said taking my arm and bringing me over to the dress. It was a dark red and white, simple but still one of the finer things that I had ever seen. If I managed to buy this dress for Jane I could alter it for her so she could wear it for a few years to come as it looked like it was just a tad large now already for her; but she would grow into it. The only problem was the price, much too expensive for me to buy and the dress was more expensive than it looked. She felt bad for using her charms on Julia as her husband would be furious when he found out: but I really wanted to get this dress for Jane.
