Bridget sighed and leaned back in her seat. Her mom had sent her upstairs after she helped wash dishes from dinner, telling her to start on her homework. But Bridget wasn't in the mood for homework.
With Coldplay singing soothingly in her ears, Bridget's mind wandered over the events of the day. After eating lunch with the four girls, they had drove around, trilling along with pop songs on the radio. She had never had so much fun in her life! For the twenty minutes of driving and singing, Bridget had grinned so much that her cheeks had ached. Her face had flushed from laughing so hard and her long hair had become a wild mess due to the wind blowing into the rolled down windows. She had felt free, as though she had no worries. It was like no bullying had taken place and she was her regular self.
Then they had arrived back at school and she had reverted back to how she was. The four girls and her had exchanged numbers before heading to their classes, and Bridget had walked with curved lips for the rest of the day. At one point, Maggie had asked what had her so happy, and she had explained. Her classmate was angry, since Bridget had refused to spend lunch with her, but once Bridget had explained the sad expression Quinn had given her, Maggie understood.
"She's like a puppy!" Maggie had exclaimed, giggling at her own words. "Quinn's really sweet. She may not be the smartest girl there is, but she's so adorable and nice that nobody wants to say anything mean to her."
Bridget had gotten that impression. She had walked briefly with Quinn to her class, since the girl's own English class was right down the hall from her own. Everyone they passed kindly greeted Quinn and, strangely enough, Bridget. No one had said anything mean when Quinn tripped and fell into the lockers. Instead, a few students had rushed in order to help her up. When Quinn made a quip about how invisible goblins were out to get her, a couple students had even went along with it. Bridget, after a few awkward talks with others, had learned that Quinn, Brittany, Danielle and Arielle were highly respected and left students in awe.
Once again, where did Bridget fit in with them?
The four girls had started a fundraiser at the school for the local children's hospital once. Bridget had never even been to a children's hospital before, much less thought about one. The girls had gathered the school together to bring in old clothes and blankets and food, and then had given it to the homeless. Bridget had once bought a sandwich for a homeless guy when she visited California, and had it thrown back at her. These girls were incredible people, while Bridget was just... normal. A bit messed up, but still normal.
She didn't belong with them.
Bridget released a soft breath and grabbed the book she was in the middle of reading from her nightstand. But when she opened to the page where the green ribbon was hoding her place, her phone stopped playing music and began vibrating. With confusion and slight apprehension of who it could possibly be, Bridget picked up her phone and looked at the screen.
Brittany.
Brittany was calling.
Brittany was calling her!
With a nervous breath, she answered the call and held her phone to her ear, hoping that her voice didn't sound weird or anything. "Hello?"
"Bridget!" came Brittany's voice. Bridget felt her lips tilt up at the edges into a small grin. "I'm so glad you didn't give me a phony number or whatever!"
"Hi, Brittany," she greeted, tone of voice more tame than Brittany's elated one. "Not to be mean or anything, but, uh, why'd you call? We saw each other at school earlier."
There was a faint giggle in the background, alerting Bridget to the fact that Quinn was there. And if Quinn was there, than Danielle would be there. She knew Arielle wasn't, since the girl had said something about work right after school until eight. "Actually, Quinn wanted me to call and say hi! So, hi!"
