As the children watched the elders in front of them, the eldest but tiniest of the girls spoke up. "That is not right! We can't be kept from our mates!" The two elders gasped in surprise, while the other kids went quiet, staring at the girl. The surprise evident on their faces as they realized it was the runt that spoke up like that. She stood up, obviously about to walk off. A few of the kids had joined her in standing up but they weren't about to walk off like she was. Just as she was about to walk away from everyone, the leaders of the clan came to watch the kids.

"What is going on here?" The wolves Alpha spoke first, while the cat's Matriarch stayed quiet, watching the situation.

"We just gave them our history, that is all Alpha." The male elder spoke to his direct Alpha, his head bowed.

"Then why is the girl walking away?"

As it turned out the runt had started walking away, her mind made up. She was not going to shift and let her side of the clan be known. Not to the elders or leaders, at least.

"Selene." The voice that called her was known to all sitting and watching. Her mother, the Werecats Matriarch growled.

The girl froze in place. "Yes mother?" Her voice was quiet now, far from what it had been before.

"Come back here."

Selene had turned round, her head down, not daring to look at her mother. However she didn't move back to the other kids.

"Selene, now."

Still not moving from where she had stopped, Selene looked up at her mother, then directly past her, to the elders that were still sitting, and not touching. With a sigh she walked back towards the group of kids. Two of the boys instantly came to her sides. Her best friends, Hex and Xavier.

"Now that things have settled, get back to the task at hand." The Alpha spoke to the elders who both nodded.

The old woman spoke up again, her voice still sweet as could be. "Who would like to start?" A few of the kids that had stayed sitting stood up, closing their eyes as they let their animal side take control. Soon nearly all the kids that were in the group had shifted, wolves and cats of various sizes, colors, and breeds, most cats were a different type of cat, much unlike wolves.

All but three of them.

The wolf elder that had been watching spoke up. "You three can shift together if you want."

Hex smiled, stepping away from Selene and Xavier, closing his eyes as his bones started to pop and fur sprouted. His tail and ears appearing and then he shifted, becoming a solid black panther. His normally golden brown eyes now solid yellow. He then sat down next to Selene and nudged her hand.

She smiled slightly at Hex, then looked to Xavier. He shrugged his shoulders, but kept his eyes on her. They already knew what the other was and what they looked like. However they didn't look like the others in the clan. "The same time?" He whispered to her, and she shook her head. "I refuse to shift." She had spoken loud enough that everyone had heard her.

A collective gasp and a few confused snorts could be heard from the crowd. A growl from her mother was heard above the rest.

"Selene, every child must shift tonight." The elder cat had stood up from her place and walked over to the girl. Instantly silencing her mothers growl. The young girl looked up at the elder and smiled sweetly. "I understand that but I refuse too."

The elder nodded, understanding. As she knew how close the girl was with the boy next to her. The silence had grown tense. "She more than likely can't shift yet, so let it be. Things like that have happened with Runts before." The Alpha spoke up with an annoyed growl in his voice.

So far as everyone knew, except for Xavier and Selene. Selene couldn't shift, as they had never seen her do so.

"Xavier, shift then please." The elder cat smiled to him then went back to her seat.

Xavier had nodded, his black hair moving a bit into his face, covering his green eyes, and the look in them. He stepped away from Selene and smirked to the crowd before he looked back at his best friend. As he shifted every one had taken a few steps back. He had become a huge solid black wolf, with what seemed to be red highlights or tips on his fur, his eyes also, had turned red. As he shook himself out, he laid down next to Selene. She had sat down next to him and Hex, between the two of them as normal.

Selene's mother had crossed her arms and looked to the wolves Alpha, then back to the group of 13, 14, and 15 year olds. "As you have all shifted, you are to go to your respective territories. If you shifted to the side your parents are not part of you may go and tell them, afterwards, please go to your pack or pride house for the start of your training." She had said the same as every leader before her since the incident that separated the clan into two.

As the other kids headed to do as ordered, Selene stayed put with Hex and Xavier. Hex was an orphan, and Xavier was the Alphas son, much like Selene was the Matriarchs daughter. Even the elders had headed home for the night, since the moon was now high in the sky.

The leaders looked at the three and sighed. "Selene, you will be staying in the neutral part of the territory since you cannot shift." Her mother had been the one to say that and she sounded so disappointed. "You boys need to go and join the others."

The boys nodded, both standing from their previous positions, nudging Selene. However Xavier stayed while Hex walked off.

'You need to show them...'  He was linking Selene.

'Why should I? It will mean we cannot be together.'

'Do you really want them to think you cannot shift?'

Their conversation ended up being cut short by Xavier's father. "Let's go son."

Xavier huffed but nodded and once again nudged Selene. Leaving her to stand there, as everyone had left the one unable to shift.....
