Most mothers sing lullabies to their children. Mine screams at me instead. I live in the slums of Brooklyn, residing in a two bedroom apartment that smells like cigarettes and dead dreams. My father left us a couple of months ago, as expected and accepted, and my mother became even more of a recluse since. The poor woman can't even go to work, so she deals and buys drugs to pay rent.

And me, you ask? I graduated high school with grades that could've gotten me into college, but of course, I couldn't afford it. I had so many plans as a child to do something with the little I was given; as I grew, I lost motivation. Now I'm nineteen with no friends, no future, and no father.

"Hannah! Get in here, I need to talk to you," my mom shouted from her bedroom that she hadn't left from in days. I sighed as I walked to her room.

"Yes?"

"Sit down." I sat down with my eyebrows furrowed.

"What?"

"I can't pay all of the bills alone, anymore. You're going to have to get a job."

"That's all? I was planning on getting a job, anyway-"

"That isn't all." I waited for her to continue. "I don't know how to say this, but," she looked at the ground, or practically everywhere besides me. "I already told the people at The Blue Angel that you would work there every night if they payed you more than the other girls. They agreed."

"What is that? And is the pay good?"

"The Blue Angel is, um, a strip club." My eyebrows furrowed in confusion and disgust. But, of course, me being self-sacrificing, I ask one question in a whisper.

"How good is the pay?"
