Reed Deming

"Reed, get up. Breakfast is ready." Blake burst through my door, scaring the crap out of me. "Jesus, Blake. Why do you have to do that?" I started getting out of bed, rubbing my eyes. I walked down the stairs and sat down at the table with the rest of my family. We all just ate in awkward silence until my mom spoke up.

"You did really great yesterday at boot camp, hunny. I was really proud of you." she complimented. "Thank you." I smiled. "And I saw you and Kayleigh holding hands on stage." my dad stated. My head snapped up and my eyes widened. "What?"

"You two were holding hands before they announced the results on stage. Are you dating?" he questioned. I thought I was going to pass out for a second. "Aww! My baby Reed has a girlfriend!" my mom cooed. "No.. I don't like her.. I mean.. Not like that..." I stuttered and felt my face getting hot. Blake was laughing and started making kissing noises at me. "Stop it! We're not dating! She's just my friend!" I argued.

"Reed and Kayleigh! Sitting in a tree! K-I-S-S-I-N-G!" he teased. I clenched my teeth and felt my face burning. I scooted the chair out from the table and ran up the stairs to my room. I slammed the door and sat on my bed. Was it really that obvious that I liked her? Obviously, it must be since everyone is noticing. I need to tell Kayleigh before she notices. I decided to text her.

 Reedy-Bear: hey you :)

Kaytie-Kat: hai :P

Reedy-Bear: wanna meet me down at the tree house?

Kaytie-Kat: of course ;)

Reedy-Bear: see you there!

Kaytie-Kat: kk :D

I changed out of my pajamas into shorts and a t-shirt and quickly brushed my teeth. I grabbed my phone and ran out the door to the tree house. It was only 8:30 in the morning so it wasn't hot. It was actually really nice out.

I walked through the woods, the morning birds chirping and rays of sun shining through the branches of the trees. The woods was beautiful in the morning. I got to the tree house, greeting Kayleigh with a smile when I saw her waiting. She was carrying a picnic basket. "I packed a couple snacks just in case we got hungry." she stated.

We climbed up the ladder and into the tree house. I looked around. It wasn't much different from before. I haven't been here in a while because of X factor. It felt nice to be back here. I sat down on the floor next to Kayleigh. She looked gorgeous.

Her brown hair was flowing in its natural waves. Her highlights were getting really light from being in the sun so much this summer. Her hazel-green eyes had an outline of blue in them and they were sparkling more than ever. Her smile was incredibly bright, it made me grin. I looked away and smiled to myself. How did I ever get so lucky to have a friend like her?

I looked around at the woods. The leaves on the trees were starting to turn brown. A breeze blew by and swept a few along with it. The summer was ending and it was almost fall. "Are you ready for school to start tomorrow?" I asked. "No. I don't want this summer to end." she half-smiled, but then something popped into my mind that was very unexpected.

The night I kissed Kayleigh.

She still didn't know about it. I've been wanting to tell her, but I just don't know how. "Hey I kissed you while you were sleeping." It's weird! I have to though. She deserves to know.

"Kayleigh?" I hesitated. "Yeah?" she looked at me, her full attention on me. "Do you remember that night we painted the tree house?" I asked. "Of course! It was a lot of fun." she smiled. I remembered how much fun we had. "Yeah, but do you remember falling asleep and I had to carry you back to your house?" I asked. "Oh yeah. I remember-" she stopped and her expression immediately changed. It scared me. "You do?" I questioned. "Y-Yeah." she stuttered. "Well, I-" "Reed." she cut me off. "What?"

"I know you kissed me. I was awake."

My heart stopped. "I-I'm so sorry I did that. I shouldn't have. It was dumb and-" "Reed, it's ok. I didn't mind it. I actually umm... liked it... a lot." she blushed. I felt my cheeks burning. "Y-You liked it?"

"Yeah. I was pretty surprised at first, and a bit mad to be honest because you knew I would've never known about it, but I liked it a lot." she explained. "Oh." I looked at the floor, embarrassed. There was an awkward silence.

"Why did you do it?" she asked me. I looked up at her. Her full attention was on me. This was the moment I had to tell her.

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. I looked at her for a moment. She was waiting for me to say something. "I know we're best friends, Kayleigh... but I don't want to be." I stated. "W-What?" she stuttered. "I want to be more than that. I don't know how long I've been like this, but I really like you. No, scratch that. I love you. You're the most amazing girl I've ever met. I kissed you because I needed it. I wanted it. I wanted it to be real, because I knew you would never feel the same way about me-"

Her lips crashed into mine. It was only for a quick second, but I was surprised and didn't know what to do. She looked up at me, and her eyes stared into mine.  "It is real." she stated softly. The touch of her soft lips lingered on mine as my cheeks burned. She does like me back.  My heart began to race as we started to lean in.

Our lips touched and I felt sparks immediately. They moved in perfect sync. It felt as if we were on top of the world and fireworks were bursting all around us. I've never felt anything like this. All this time, I've been afraid that she wouldn't feel the same way, but she has. I smiled into the kiss, making her smile too. We've been best friends for years, but everything was about change. Everything would be different. I loved being her friend, but I loved this more. It's as if I've finally finished a puzzle. Everything was in place and the world was balanced. I couldn't think of anything else except for this moment, right now.

We pulled away to catch our breath. "Whoa." I breathed. She smiled her beautiful smile at me. I finally did it.

sorry for the short chapter but i think it was enough :) i have a lot more coming because this is just the beginning.

i went to a one direction concert on Friday so i didn't get to write it then. it would've been out earlier, but i stalked 5sos all weekend. i got 4 chances to meet them and i missed them all by only a few minutes. u don't know how mad i was :(
