There was a knock on the closed bedroom door. Once, twice and a third time. Without pause, the door opened and an older woman walked through the threshold. She stood in amazement as she stared down at her daughter curled up with a boy. She wore a limp green gown and fuzzy rabbit slippers on her feet, her dyed dark red hair tied in knots on top of her head. Her long slender fingers went to her lips as she gaped in a slight moment of shock.
'A boy?' She thought, 'a boy is in my daughters bed. This is unusual.' Her thought continued in her head.My leg twitched a bit and moved it up Harley's body to just above his pelvis and my hand lay gently on his neck. I rubbed my head underneath his chin and caught hair in my eyes, as I blinked I felt a presence lingering on me. When I realised I was being watched, I opened my eyes to their entirety. "Mum?" I rubbed my eyes red.
"Um..." My mother lingered for a moment, "I was just, um... Never mind." She stopped and turned around with a halt. "Sweety." She paused again, "next time you have a boy over, please, leave a note or something." And with a sly grin she walked out of the room, shutting the door behind her.
I scratched at my tangled hair just as Harley opened his eyes. He lay under My body, I was still slung over him, his body full of radiant heat and warmth that made him a very approachable person. "Who was that? Was that Chandra?" He asked.
"Yeah. And you know that she doesn't like you using her first name. Its Mrs. Landers to you." We always seemed to harmonise the last part as if we had said more than that once. And we had.
"Yeah, yeah. I know." He lifted his head trying to get up but threw his head back in failure. He sighed.
We looked at each other through an early morning daze, almost hypnotic. I Could feel my heart beat threw my skin and his threw him. Slow. Slight. But lovely. The familiarity of his scent, his smile, his body. Everything that reminded me of before Lexa, before she changed for someone that clearly didn't get that she didn't belong to just one person, she couldn't. But she tried. For Lexa. But now? How did she go on knowing that nothing would be the same. I had loved before but never like the way I loved Lexa. When the haze fell, I was the first to move. I rose to my side, then I slid my feet over the edge of the bed and stood. He looked at me a moment longer before doing the same.
"I think your mum thinks that we slept together, like 'slept together, slept together.' " he put quotations around the words like a marker.
I shook my head. My mother knew that Harley and I were just friends, and had been for years. They had had sleep overs all the time as children and did basically everything together since they were eight. "No. I don't think so. Never mind, just... Tell me. What are we doing today? Anything? Just nothing relating to sitting down a crying myself back to sleep." I smiled. It seemed to be coming easier now.
He flashed a wicked smile at me and said softly and finally, " well first, we're going shopping. You need something slutty to ware tonight."
Curiosity flooded my face, I could tell by his reaction, then with quick realisation my eyes widened and I shook my head. "No." I almost laughed.
"Yes." And at that, was the finale word.
