Our last day of school was fun, but I was happy when it ended. When the afternoon bell rang I was literally ran over by the other kids trying to leave, and the teachers didn't do anything as usual. I was happy to leave this place but I was sad about leaving Grover behind at the school, at the mercy of the bullies. Grover walked up soon after I got up,"Hey. What happened?" he asked. "I got knocked down and before I could get up everyone used me as a carpet." I said. "Are you going here next year?" "No, I'm transferring to Yancy Academy. Why are going here next year?" he replied. "No, I don't know where I'll be. Come on, let's go home."
After a few minutes of walking we came to our apartment building. We buzzed the front desk, so we could get in and walked upstairs to our floor. Grover's apartment was two doors down from mine, so he walked me to my door and I knocked. My mommy opened the door, smiled and said "Hi, sweetie. Hello, Grover." "Hi, Ms.Burns." Grover replied. "Grover, do you want to join us for stories later tonight?" I asked excitedly. He looked sad and said, "I'm sorry Alex, I can't because I have to pack for Camp." Mommy gave him a knowing look. "That's alright Grover. I hope you have fun at Camp." I said as I hugged him. "And good luck at Yancy, next year." "Thanks. Good luck next year, too. Bye." he said and closed the door behind him. I walked down the hall to my bedroom, put my backpack in the back of my closet, walked over to my window and looked out to the street below. Cars were passing by, people were walking fast on the sidewalk and homeless people were begging for money or food; nothing unusual. I stood there for a few more minutes before I decide to go lay on my bed and daydream until sunset. Before I knew it I was fast asleep and dreaming.
"I was standing at my window, looking out. There was a man standing down in the alley looking up at me. He started doing tricks with the water from some of the nearby puddles, while smiling brightly. Then he looked around and mouthed 'stay safe.' He then gestured for me to open my hand and a small object appeared in it. I looked down at it and smiled, but when I looked back at the place where the man was standing, he was gone.""Alex. Alex. Wake up. It's dark." I heard mommy say. I opened my eyes and smiled, "It is? Are we going to tell stories now?" I asked excitedly. "Oh, this just came for you. The UPS man dropped it off outside our door." she said and handed me a small brown box with my name and address written on top. I started peeling off the tape so I could open the box, inside the box was a smaller velvet box. I picked it up and opened it a letter fell out. Mommy picked it up and unfolded it so she could read it:
"To my daughter on her 8th birthday,
I hope you have been well the past eight years. I wish I could have watched you grow up, personally. I bet you've become just as beautiful and as smart as your mother. I miss you both. Stay safe, my darling Alex.
-From your Father.
P.S. The charm is powerful keep it with you. Don't click the shell until it is absolutely necessary."Mommy had started crying with a slight smile halfway through the letter. I pulled the charm bracelet out of the box so we could look at it closer, it looked like a fancy pitchfork on a chain. In my dream something like this appeared in my hand. "Mommy is this a pitchfork?" I asked. She laughed and said "No it's a Trident. It's your father's ---" Then a loud bang came from the front part of the house. A few more bangs came and mommy closed and locked the door. She looked down at me with a scared expression and my father's words rang in my mind 'stay safe.' Did he know what was going to happen? My thoughts were interrupted by loud growling and scratching coming from outside my bedroom door. Something black burst through the door and I clicked the shell and swung as a reflex. The black thing exploded into yellow dust and two more came lumbering through the door. I tried to swing again but one of the black creatures tackled me, knocking my charm from my hand. When I moved my head so it wouldn't bite my face off. Then I noticed my charm wasn't a charm anymore, it was a glowing sword. I turned the other way to see mommy had been tackled too. It bit her, she screamed and tried to knock the thing off. She did and started running towards me from the other side of my room. I finally got a good look at the creature it looked like an overgrown dog. It jumped and scratched mommy across the back. She crumpled to the floor unmoving, while the dog thing circled her before attacking again. The dog thing on top of me tried to bite my face off and I screamed. The next thing I saw I wasn't expecting, Grover came running in my bedroom playing a tune on some pipes. Then I see that both the dog things are yelping in pain and exploding into yellow dust. I ran over to my mommy, but she wasn't breathing. I started crying and told Grover to do something. Grover grabbed my hand and we ran out of my room into the living room, where he grabbed our phone and dialed 9-1-1. He told them where we were and a story the cops would believe. Shortly after he hung up, he pulled the phone cord out the wall. "Grover what are you doing?" I exclaimed while crying. "It has to look a little more believable as to why we disappeared." He said. "What do you mean?" I asked in between sobs. "We have to go to make sure no one finds you. It's my responsibility to make sure you get somewhere safe. We have to leave now!" Grover said. He grabbed my hand and started running out the door dragging me behind him.
