Chapter 4: All Together Now
"Hi," I instantly feel stupid for saying that, why couldn't I say something cool? "I am Number--"
"Five," John Smith finished for me.
The looks in everyone's faces is just priceless. I've finally met the rest. We're finally together. They look horrible, like they haven't had a shower in days. But they look amazing. I feel like I'm about to cry, but I hold it; I don't really want to seem weak.
"I am Number Nine," says the boy with shoulder-length greasy black hair. He grabs my hand and bows to kiss it, exaggerating his movements.
I snort, "Lucky number nine? Nice."
"Let me introduce you to the group!" he is still exaggerating his hand movements. It's really funny watching him, actually.
"This," he points out at the closest girl. She's beautiful. Her hair is obviously dyed blond; seeing that her dark roots are showing. "Is Number Six."
I imitate Number Nine by kissing her hand with exaggerated movements. In reply to my little play, she places her forearm on her forehead and feigns a sigh loudly. Everybody laughs.
"This here is-"
"John Smith," I interrupt Nine.
"Number Four," John winks at me.
"So you're the sucker who kept me alive! Nice job staying alive after Three, by the way," I nudge at him laughing.
Nine introduced me to Sarah Heart, John's human girlfriend. The first thing that came to my mind was Natalia. Is she my human girlfriend? I mean, we kissed but wasn't it because I was leaving? Is there more to it than just a goodbye-kiss? Also, how could John bring her along? Doesn't he know that what we're doing isn't safe? Or is it safer for her here with him? Is Natalia safe?
These questions fly through my mind while I smile and shake Sarah's hand.
"This is Marina; Number Seven," Nine points to a girl that clearly looks older than me. She is very delicate looking, but also very fierce looking, in a way.
"Next is Eight."
Eight was a boy with a very good tan and curly brown hair. He reminds me of Natalia because of the hair. Oh Natalia, I think, why can't I get you out of my mind?
"And then there's Ella," said Nine interrupting my thoughts, "Number Ten."
I gasp a little too loudly. "Oh my good, so it is true!" I grab her little hands and smile like a fool. "This is amazing. You are amazing!" I can't contain my excitement. A tenth Garde.
Nine introduced me to Sam Goode, which I already knew that he was a human. He looks way worse up close than what he looked like in the air.
"Last, but not least, Malcolm Goode," Nine patted the man on the back.
"Wait, Goode? You're a human?" he nods. "I thought you were a Cepan!"
After a while of silence, Six breaks the ice and says, "We've, uh... all lost our Cepans..."
I just stand there awkwardly holding back my tears. I don't even have to wonder how because I know how. Fucking. Mogadorians.
"I'm sorry," I whispered.
I didn't know what to say, but the I remembered Lorianne and David still standing next to the helicopter.
"Oh," I walk up to them, "Everyone, this is Lorianne, my Cepan."
