The picture is Breeden, Forest's 'friend.'

Tuesday was normal enough for everyone. Forest pulled the lights down from her bed, replacing them with scented candles, which she set on the table next to her bed and on the windowsill. She also put one in the bathroom, on the counter.
She found a box of matches in the kitchen and took it upstairs to her room. She lit all the candles in her room, filling the upstairs with the scent of flowers.
Forest put another candle in Nate's room, one that smelled like the ocean. She put it on the table by his bed and left it there for him to find.
Forest was sitting on the window seat in her room, reading, when Nate walked in.
"Forest, why did you put a candle in my room?" he asked, a confused look on his face.
"Because I thought you might like that one. I did the same thing to Breeden before he left for Iraq. I put a candle that smelled like honey suckles in his suitcase." Forest giggled. "I knew he would like that one, because it would remind him of when we were kids."
Nate smiled and shook his head at her. "Forest, you are one weird girl."
Forest smiled. "That's a good thing, isn't it? I mean, I don't wish to be like other girls, most of which waste their time trying to look nice to impress the guys who only care about their outward appearance."
"When you put it that way, yes. Of course it's a good thing. But I want to know, why this kind?"
Forest grinned. "The other morning, when I woke up, you had your face buried in my hair. I went for something that would smell like the ocean, because that's what my hair smells like."
Nate chuckled. "Well, thanks for the candle, Forest." He left with a somewhat confused look on his face.

"Really, Max, I'm just fine." Forest said. Her and Max were walking to their lockers together. They had their lockers just down the hall from eachother.
"Are you sure, Forest?" Max asked.
"Yes, Max. I'm sure that I'm just fine." Forest was starting to get irritated at him. She suddenly noticed a flyer on the wall.
The flyer was about cheerleading tryouts to fill the two newly opened spots in the cheer squad. Because it was the beginning of the year, two senior girls had just left, leaving two open spots on the cheer squad.
Forest read the flyer, before turning to Max. "Hey, Max, where can I sign up for cheerleading tryouts?"
Max just looked at her. "Are you serious? Do you seriously want to sign up for cheerleading?" He seemed very surprised by her.
"You would be surprised by all the things I like to do. Where can I sign up for cheerleading tryouts?"
"You can go to the office or you can go to the bulletin board in the main hallway. They usually put a clipboard on the bulletin board for girls who want to sign up." Max continued to look at her confusedly.
Forest grinned. "This will be a lot of fun for me."
Between first and second hour, Forest went to the bulletin board and signed up for the cheerleading tryouts.

During fifth hour, Forest began to cry, laying her head down on her desk. She sobbed so quietly that Nate was the only one that could hear her. He was also the only one that noticed.
In the middle of fifth hour, a boy with black hair walked in, wearing an Army uniform. He had a slip of paper in his hand, which he set on Mrs. Quin's desk. He whispered something to her, before walking along the rows until he was standing in front of Forest's row.
Forest was the only person who wasn't looking at the boy. She had not even looked up when he walked in. "Forest, don't ignore me." he said, grinning.
Forest slowly lifted her head. The moment she saw him, she slowly stood up. She was slow in making her way to him. The moment she got to him, she wrapped her arms around him. He chuckled, wrapping his arms around her as she buried her face in his shirt.
"Forest, are you not going to introduce me to your friends?" he asked. Forest let go, turning to face the other kids.
"This is my brother, Breeden." Forest said to the class. Then, turning to Breeden, she said, "I didn't expect you to come here. Honestly, I didn't even expect you to be able to come at all."
"Mrs. Mooring, you better hurry up and gather your things together. Your brother has a pass for you to leave school for the rest of the day." Mrs. Quin said, giving Forest a stern look.
Forest was quick to gather her things together, rushing her brother out of the classroom.

When the bell rang for lunch, the other kids were surprised when they found Forest and her brother in the cafeteria, sitting at the table in the corner, talking quietly.
When her friends got into the cafeteria, Forest took her brother to their table and introduced him to all of them.
At Nate's table, James was talking about going over to Forest's table to talk to her 'boyfriend.' He eventually got up and started toward them.
At the same time, Forest's brother, seeing James going their way, got up and started toward him. Forest rushed after him.
"Breeden, please don't do this." Forest begged.
"Forest, he hurt-" Breeden started, only to be interrupted by Forest.
"Breeden!" Forest yelled.
Breeden stopped. "Fine," He turned and walked back to the table.
James was standing in front of her by then. Forest gave him an apologetic shrug. Then, surprising everyone, Forest punched him in the face.
He went down immediately, his nose broken and bleeding. Forest bent down over him, whispering things to him. Only Nate and Breeden noticed her taking James's keys from his pocket.
Forest got up quickly, before walking back to their table and sitting down in Breeden's lap.
"Oof!" Breeden said, being dramatic. This drew laughter from the others at the table.
Forest rolled her eyes at him, crossing her legs. Her and Breeden stayed at the table for a little longer, before they left the cafeteria.
Things got weird after that.
