(Recap)
"Thank you for trusting me...Lily, now it's my turn to return the favor." He takes a deep breath before continuing.
"My name is-"(Lily's POV)
"My name is Aiden the Fireheart, but you can just call me Aiden.", he says confidently, obviously proud of his name as I was with mine. "So," I ask, "Can I now please eat something? I haven't eaten for a while, and I'm starving!"(Aiden's POV)
She gives me her best puppy eyes and fakes a whimper, which I could never say no to. "Alright Lily, but you'll have to wait until the rest if the bacon is..." I trail off, as it seems Lily hadn't been listening and was already attacking the bacon on the spit. "...cooked.", I finished, now slightly ticked off.She notices me glaring at her and quickly brushes off the crumbs on her lap wailing, "I'm so sorry, I haven't eaten properly for a day or two, so I couldn't help myself." She uses her puppy eyes on me again, which I couldn't refuse, but she needed to learn her lesson.
I chid her in a quiet voice, "I forgive you, but next time it could mean losing your life if you don't listen, ya hear?" She bows her head in shame, making me feel a bit guilty about nagging her, but she needed to understand so it really wasn't her life next time.
Now that I think of it, what is her backstory? Did she have family, friends, maybe a boyfriend? Should I even ask? No, I don't want to trespass on something she is uncomfortable about. Especially if it is still a sore subject for her.
"Aiden?", she says in a worried tone, looking at me concerned. She continues, "Um...Aiden? You know that you were staring at me for like 5 minutes, right?" My face turns tomato. "O-Oh, I-I w-was? I guess I sorta zoned out, sorry 'bout that.", I stuttered, my face still red as a tomato. "Oh, it's all right!", she throws her head back and laughs, completely oblivious to the fact that my face still looks like it got a bad sunburn.
She peers behind me, her face suddenly serious. I'm confused at her sudden change of expression, so I turn around, immediately shocked by the sunset. Time really does fly when you least expect to. "It's turning dark, we should set up camp.", she remarks, her face happy once more, with what seemed fear flickering in her evergreen eyes.
Was she scared of something? Well, whatever it was, I'll protect her from it however possible. I smile weakly, "Yeah, let's set up camp. I'll make a bed for you since I guess you'll be sleeping here for the night." She nods before we split up to get materials for the long night ahead of us.
(2 hours later)
I smooth the covers once more and lie on my back. I stare at the stars, their brilliance lighting up the black night sky while I rested. Whew, that was a lot of work, but I'm glad that Lily helped out. I look over at her sitting cross-legged beside the big pot of stew. She hums a bit, then notices that I'm finally done with my share of setting up the camp. She motions for me to come over, so I stand up, walk over, and sit down, pulling my knees to my chest. She wraps her arms around me and gives me a hug, surprising me slightly. I hug her back when she murmurs, "Thanks for letting me help set up the campsite. You're like the big brother I never had."
My body freezes, as I wish that she thought of me in a different manner.
