Quote:
"If it rains, like when we dropped in we'll need shelters all right." (Page 52)
This is proof of Ralph taking leadership. The fact that Ralph has added - "all right." - shows how Ralph thinks of this as an obvious decision. The other reason is to provide protection against the nightmares and the "Beastie". The "Beastie" haunts their dreams. "They talk and scream." The boys are reluctant to build the huts because nobody is helping them - they keep getting distracted - want to be selfish and playful. They do not want the responsibility.
Quote:
"But you can feel as if you're not hunting, but - being hunted; as if something's behind you all the time in the jungle." (Page 53)
This is Jack admitting he is scared. The effect this has on the reader is that the reader has seen an insight to Jack's more fragile side. This side to Jack is unexpected because it is a great contrast to Jack's usual behaviour : arrogant and rough. In my opinion, Jack is in a constant self-conflict. One minute he is calm and the next he has - "the mad look back in his eye's."
The quote mentions "but - being hunted;" This symbolises that something is always in the back of your mind, plaguing your mind, plaguing your thoughts. In my opinion, when Jack is "being hunted;" the thing hunting him is - in my opinion - guilt. His "sins" are catching up to him; but the one thing haunting his conscience is maybe the guilt for killing his prey. This emphasizes that he is just a little boy; and that he still gets scared.
Quote:
"He wanted to explain how people were never quite what you thought they were." (Page 55)
This is Ralph admitting that he is beginning to re-think his first impressions of the other boys. I think Ralph is referring to Jack and his change of character; villainous towards Piggy, hero towards the "beastie" situation. This is symbollising that Ralph is starting to identify the thoughts and the behaviours of the other characters but the fact that he didn't actually say what he though, gives the reader the impression that Ralph wanted to keep his thoughts to himself because he didn't know how to make them understand.
Summary to Chapter Three : Huts on the beach.
We are being introduced to the different sides to everyone as Ralph realises "people were never quite what you thought they were."
We are shown Jack's more vulnerable side. When he admits his feelings "but being hunted".This is the first time Jack has been so fragile.
Ralph is trying to make the island more like a society for the boys to try and rovide them with normality but Simon is the only one helping. In my opinion, Simon is only helping for Ralph's sake.
We are also shown a weakness in the boys, when they would rather play than build the huts, they do not want to own up to the responsibility and face the fact that there stay is becoming more serious. They prefer the ignorance and bliss.
