Quotes:

"Sucks to your auntie." (Page 3)

"Sucks to your ass-mar." (Page 3)

This is proof that Ralph is immature. This also proves that Ralph is childish because of the use of the word "Sucks". In my opinion Ralph just wants to have fun because he is assured that his father will rescue the boys. This shows that Ralph thinks everything will be fine and that for the time being he wants to have fun. In my opinion Ralph is acting childish because he is trying to live in ignorance. Ralph is also trying to forget responsibility and give it to his "daddy" who he has so much confidence in.

Quote:

"My auntie told me not to run." (Page 3)

Even though the boys are away from any authority, Piggy is still clinging onto the "rules"; by him still abiding by an auntie who isn't even there it shows that Piggy has respect and love for his auntie and it also shows that he is being sensible. In my opinion, Piggy is abiding by his auntie's rules because he is trying to keep some familliarity in a foriegn environment.

Quote:

"His face was crumpled without silliness." (Page 16)

The description of Jack makes him sound stern and unchildish. The words; "without silliness" prove that Jack is not like a normal child (immature or silly) but rather heartless and stern - like an evil person. When Jack's face was described as "crumpled" it connoted that he was frowning or that his face is permanently showing displeasure. This hints towards unhappiness, cruelty and even heartlessness. In my opinion, the imagery given for Jack, represents a child who is scary and unapproachable.

Quote:

"Piggy's glasses were misted again - this time with humiliation." (Page 21)

Glasses tend to mist after experiencing an abrupt change of temperature. I know this from personal experience. Piggy's glasses must have misted because his facial temperature increased - due to him facing embarassment. This was after his will to join Ralph, Simon, and Jack was denied. In my opinion it was a betrayal when Ralph didn't allow Piggy to join. This is because since the start of the book, it was just Ralph and Piggy but now that the others have came, Ralph has distanced himself from Piggy as proved when he shared Piggy's nickname in order for amusement and then again when he didn't let Piggy come along with Jack and Simon.

Summary for : The sound of the shell.

The chapter starts off when a plane has been attacked and has therefore crashed on an idyllic paradise like island, only the young school boys on the plane have survived.

We are introduced to Ralph and Piggy, two of the story's protagonists.

Both Ralph and Piggy are alone and even though Ralph is excited by the island and the prospect of no authority, Piggy still abides by his auntie's rules.

After Ralph discovers a shell - which he thinks is pretty - Piggy tells him it is a conch and teaches him to blow it. Ralph blows the conch and all the other boys on the island are assembled here Piggy collects their names.

Jack Merridew is introduced with his choir boys and is seen as a villianous character immediately, with his dislike to Piggy foreshadowing what is to come.

The boys have a vote and Ralph is elected as chief due to his attractiveness and although Jack is displeased, he is given the position of leader of the hunters (his choir).
