The Journey

Chapter Five

(2 ½ weeks later)

Robert woke up and checked the time on his phone. 4:45 a.m. He set his phone down and rubbed his eyes. He reached over and turned the lamp on and sat up. He looked over at Kym, who was sound asleep, with her back facing him. For a few minutes he just watched her sleep, watching her body as she took every breath. As he felt more awake he stretched his arms but was careful not to accidentally hit Kym. He opened his nightstand drawer and pulled out a picture. An ultrasound picture.

He held the picture, careful not to bend it or rip it. The more he looked at it, the bigger his smile got. At times he didn't believe it was real. He found himself pinching his arm just in case he was dreaming, but it was real. This was real. They were real. Two. There was two of them. Him and Kym had created two little blessings. After a few minutes Robert put the picture down next to his phone and got up. He walked out to the kitchen to get a glass of water. As he was walking back to the bedroom he saw Lola, was asleep on the love seat. He put the glass of water down on the end table and walked over to Lola, who woke up as she heard his footsteps get closer to her.

"Come on baby." Robert said as he picked her up Lola as she started wagging her tail. He walked to the bedroom, picking up the glass of water on the way. He set the glass on the night stand and climbed back into bed. Lola made herself comfortable on Robert's lap. He took a sip of water, set the glass down, and picked up the ultrasound picture. "You see here, Lola, these two little blobs," Robert pointed at the tiny white blobs, showing Lola, who was minding her own business, not really paying attention. Robert continued, "they're going to be joining our family soon." Lola looked towards the picture and started sniffing it. Kym woke up and continued to lay facing away from Robert, listening as he was talking to Lola. "If you notice they are in separate sacs, which means they are fraternal. So there could be two boys, or two girls, or one boy and one girl, but we won't know for a few months." Kym turned over and Robert looked over at her. "Oh baby I'm sorry, did I wake you?"

"No I've been awake for a little bit." Kym said as she moved closer to Robert. She rested her head on his chest as he put his arm around her. Lola moved to the end of the bed, lying close to their feet. Kym intertwined her legs with Robert's and got more comfortable. "I was listening to you talk to Lola." Kym said as she looked at the ultrasound picture.

"Is that what you were doing?" Robert chuckled glancing down at her.

"Yeah, it was cute." Kym took the picture from Robert and held it so they both could see. "I still can't believe it."

"Me either, but it's a wonderful surprise."

"They are a wonderful surprise." They both giggled as Kym corrected him. Kym positioned herself from her side to her back as she rested against Robert. She reached up to the arm that was around her and took his hand in hers, interlocking their fingers as Robert started rubbing his thumb on hers.

"Are you excited to be going home to Australia?"

"Are you excited?"

"I am very excited. I can't wait to see your parents and meet the rest of your family and share our amazing news."

"They are going to be so excited. That's what we have to work on today."

"What?"

"Packing. We leave tomorrow." Kym said as she looked up at Robert.

"Oh that;s right. I almost forgot. Thank you for reminding me baby." Kym giggled as he kissed her. "How are you feeling?"

"I feel a little sick and tired,but not really anything else that I have noticed. What time is it?"

Robert reached over and picked up his phone. "Almost 5:30."

"Let's go back to sleep for a couple more hours." They climbed under the blanket. Lola got up and laid down next to Kym's head. Kym moved closer to Robert as he placed his left hand on her stomach, feeling her take in every breath. He placed his right arm underneath Kym. He kissed the back of her head and started playing with her hair, massaging her head.

"I love you." He whispered in her ear.

"I love you more." Kym said as she closed her eyes and within minutes she fell asleep in his arms. He wanted to make sure Kym was asleep before he fell asleep, playing with her hair and feeling her take in every breath.
