Present Day...
Dinner was done. The dining table was cleared. Dishes were washed. Leftovers were placed in containers and placed in the fridge. The kitchen was spotless. I was wiping down the kitchen counters making sure everything was in place. Once I was done, I looked around, checked the dining room and the kitchen and made sure that I didn't forget anything. I walked around the house, making sure also that the front and back doors were locked and the windows were closed. I checked the garage as well. When everything looked all right downstairs, I started going up to our bedroom. The day is finally done. I thought. And I'm guessing we have a round two of our discussion from a while ago.
I passed by the kids' bedrooms on my way to the Master's. Jake took the kids upstairs once dinner was done to prepare them for bed while I cleaned downstairs. I paused by Sebastian's room to check on him. He was already asleep, his arms around a Minion stuffed toy that we got when we went to Universal Studios last year for a family vacation. The soft sounds of a lullaby floated to my ears from his little radio and I smiled when I saw how angelic my son looked when asleep. I quietly closed his door, but not all the way and tiptoed to the next room beside his which was Celestine's.
I stopped when I heard voices inside my daughter's room. Jake was there with her, reading her a bedtime story. I smiled despite our situation because these times were so rare and few between my husband and my daughter that I know Celestine was totally enjoying her daddy's presence.
"...and they lived happily ever after. The end," Jake's voice floated to me. I heard the soft closing of a book and some sheets rustling as Jake stood up. I heard him kissing Celestine good night.
"Good night, my sweet princess," his soft voice said.
I was about to continue on to our bedroom so he wouldn't see me eavesdropping on them when I heard the sweet voice of my little girl call back for Jake.
"Daddy?"
Jake stopped on his way out and looked back. "Yes, princess?"
"Can you give me another hug and a kiss?"
My heart broke when I heard those words. I knew from the very beginning that Celestine was a daddy's girl and that she was starting to resent seeing me all the time and not her daddy. I knew that she loves me still but her and Jake had a different level of relationship.
I heard Jake go back to her and gave her another hug and a kiss. I heard how Celestine didn't really want to let go yet. I heard Jake lie beside Celestine and then I heard our daughter stifle a sob.
"Princess, why are you crying?" Jake asked softly.
"I heard you and mommy fighting a while ago. I had to turn up the TV so Sebastian wouldn't hear."
"Oh, princess - your mom and I weren't fighting. We were just... Talking," Jake explained and I heard how he hesitated at the end.
"But I heard you and mom shouting," our daughter continued. "Are you mad at each other? Will you get a di- di... divorce?"
I couldn't help but softly gasp when I heard that. Where did our daughter learn that word?
"Sweetie, where did you learn that word?" Jake asked echoing my thoughts.
"One of my classmates from school said that her parents are doing that. She told me that it was because they were mad at each other and now she doesn't know where she will go - if it's to her mommy or to her daddy," Celestine explained and I was surprised at how eloquent my 6-year old said that to my husband. She was always a bright little girl, but I didn't like that she understood the concept of divorce.
