~Lola's POV. ~

Birds were the one normal- or as normal as it could get- sound left in this destitute land. Early sunrise and the sounds of free flying birds were the one thing that kept my hopes alive.

I'd always had a thing for trees, not sitting under them or sketching them. I climbed them. They had kept me alive when the rest of the world was falling apart right underneath me. Literally. It only seemed right to live in them so that's what I did. Two years on from that awful day and I now have a strong sturdy home. I couldn't go back into that empty city with no one there or most likely no one.

Climbing down I checked to see if there was anything abnormal but it was the same as it had been for the past two years. I'd cleared the bodies and set them alight instead of just leaving them to rot. Now there were just tall green trees surrounding me the only sign of humanity being my home. I haven't seen a human for two years I was alone in the world. Someone was out there though I knew it. Not everyone could have died in the corrupt world it was.

Today was the day I decided to venture outside of my forest, I was running out of resources for food, animals were now avoiding this area and there wasn't much else to eat other than that. I hadn't been into the city in months, all that was left were half skyscrapers and bodies strewn through the desolate streets. The place just signified death and a world full of oblivious people who thought everything would be fine forever.

As I made my way down an old pathway I looked around for anything out of the ordinary but everything was the same as it had always been. As the trees began to clear out I began to see the tall buildings left standing. Chunks missing out of the side of them with wires hanging here and there but they still stood after all the carnage.

I walked towards them in no rush or worry of being attacked, this place had been empty for years. Supermarkets hopefully still stood somewhere nearby for me to collect enough things to last the month or maybe two. I reached the first street of abandoned houses, cars parked down either side of  the street with no signs of any occupant that may have been there only 2 years ago. I slowly made my way down the street glancing at the houses, I wondered what had happened to those who once lived there whether they were now dead or had ran far away. I realised I didn't know about anything of what was happening outside of the little world I had created for myself. There could be people living only a few hours away but I would never know unless they wandered into my path.

Everyone had depended on technology to update us on what was happening in the world me included. Being out on my own had put me in a position that I had never faced before, all I had was myself and nothing else to depend on. It was peculiar but I was coping, I had to.

I reached the end of the street and across from me stood a supermarket that I needed. Crossing over and entering I looked around to see that the place was still as it had been left two years previously. Obviously I couldn't take anything that had gone off away with me but I grabbed a couple bags and filled them with cans and packets of things. Once I had filled two bags full I made my way back out of the shop and walked slowly back out the city.

I had no need to stay there. I didn't want to either, this place is filled with memories I never want to revisit. The emptiness haunts me every time I come near. My tree house is good enough for me.

Reaching the tree line I turned back around to look at the place I once called home. No one in sight for this place had been abandoned long ago. I couldn't leave even if I hated it here there was something drawing me in and keeping me close by. Maybe it was the few good memories I had left or it could  be because this is the place where I feel most at home.

I made my way back to the tree house and carried up what I had took while I was in the city, in the tree house I had three rooms; one where i kept the food, the next was a makeshift bathroom which i fetched new water to before I go up for the night and the last is my bedroom. When I first made this place and had completed it I decided to go back to my old flat and get the few things I needed. I took my mattress which was hell to bring back with me as I had to drag it all the way here so it took me two trips to get everything. In my room I had my mattress and a duvet with sheets that I cleaned every couple of weeks down at the stream, I have a few old pictures on the walls of the family I once had but now know to be dead and some of my old books and memoirs. It made it feel in some way more like a home.

I walked out and climbed up onto the branch on the tree to look out to see if there was anything abnormal around, when I knew there was nothing out of place I climbed right back down to the ground and headed back to the treeline.  When I arrived I sat down and looked out at the messed up city in a couple minutes the train would come by and stop for five minutes and leave again and every time it came i had the urge to get on it but never did. No one has ever got off of it yet but I still come to watch. Just as expected the train pulled in just as I normal, the government had started making them run by themselves about 10 years ago so it was easier for them. Just like clock work it pulled into a small station waited five minutes and left, it didn't look like any one had got off just like no one has for the past year and a half I've been watching it.

I turned around and headed back to my home and went to collect some water to wash up for the night. Once I collected the water I made my way up and headed to where I kept the food to grab some canned fruit and meat, after I'd eaten I grabbed the container of water I had collected and made my way to the 'bathroom' where I washed up. The day had gone a lot quicker than I expected as the trip into the city for food had taken longer than I thought it would and had tired me out a great deal. I went into my bedroom and lay down in bed. After a while I slowly drifted off to sleep with no worry of anyone else harming me.

Thanks for reading the first chapter hope you enjoyed it. Xx
