Byakuya sipped his tea silently and elegantly, hand steady and posture perfect. His eyes glided across to the form of his adopted sister kneeling across from him, her tea untouched. She starred intently at him. Closing his eyes with a small, inaudible sigh, he gently set down his cup.
"Is there something bothering you, Rukia?" He said smoothly.
"Renji told all about what happened." She said bluntly. Byakuya's eyes shot wide open and he hardly noticed accidentally smacking his tea cup, causing it to fall over with an ear grating clink against the saucer. A curse escaped his lips as he stood up abruptly, hot tea burning through his kimono. His hands shook as he took a cloth from a servant and wiped at the stain, the servant leaving to fetch some fresh clothes. His wide eyes looked back up at Rukia, filled with terror. His sister wore an expression of surprise.
"Relax, Nii-Sama, I lied." She said. With that, Byakuya couldn't help but release a sigh of relief as he carefully sat back down, still slightly shaky.
"I did ask him though..." She said, causing the noble to tense again, though not quite so panicky.
"All he told me was that something bad had happened and he couldn't go into details."
"What else did he say?" Byakuya asked immediately.
"He said... He was expecting you to transfer him... Or even... Kill him..." Rukia said slowly, watching her brother's reaction. Byakuya drew in a shaky breath, composing himself before answering.
"...did he?" He said vaguely, sounding as uncaring as he could manage. Inside, he was filled with confusion. Why was Renji waiting for him to kick him out? And why would he kill him?!
"He seemed convinced that he'd messed up really bad and somehow you are "paying the price," whatever that means." Rukia said. This only served to make Byakuya more confused. He sat back slightly, thinking hard.
"...Nii-Sama?" Rukia said softly, breaking his train of thought.
"What happened?"
Byakuya sighed, much like Renji had earlier, Rukia noted.
"It's none of you're concern, Rukia." The noble said sternly.
"With all due respect, Nii-Sama, Renji seems really troubled by it, as do you. I just want to see if I can help. I don't like this tension. No one does. It's starting to really affect your division... Just so you know..." Byakuya seemed to consider this for a moment before nodding once.
"Alright, Rukia, I'll attempt to do something about it. As a captain it is my responsibility to do what I can to ensure my division is running smoothly. If confronting Abarai about...what happened is what I need to do to do so, then that's what I'll do." The Kuchiki head said curtly. Rukia blinked once at him before a smile slowly stretched across her face. Byakuya felt a dull pang in his chest, as her smile reminded him so much of Hisana, the way their eyes twinkled the same way.
"That's great! I'm so glad you can look past this for the good of your division! I hope it goes well!" She says joyfully. The noble gulps, his gut twisting again like it had been doing quite recently. He hoped he knew what he was getting into. After weeks of avoiding his captain, Kuchiki Taicho finally stopped outside Renji's office one day to deliver some terrifying news.
"Abarai, before you leave for the day, I want you to stop by my office," Was all he said, not even waiting for the lieutenant to reply. Still, those words haunted the red head the rest of the day.
It was seven o'clock and after everyone else had gone hole that Renji was able to gather the courage to slowly make his way to his superior's office. He raised a shaky hand and knocked twice, softly. A muffled "enter" could be heard from the other side. Taking a deep breath, the tattooed man wiped his sweaty hands on his hakama. 'Calm down, Renji. This might not even be about that. It could just be about a new training method, or something.'He thought.
The lieutenant steeled himself before turning the knob and walking in. His Taicho didn't even look up fro my he paper he was currently working on, brush still in hand.
"You, uh... Wanted to see me Taicho...?" Renji said meekly, heart thumping in his chest.
"Sit, Abarai." Byakuya said, emotionlessly. He made a few final strokes of ink onto the paper before setting down his brush and looking up. The red head gulped as his captain made eye contact with him for the first time in weeks. Images of the noble's face, eyes screwed shut and slack jawed with a heavy blush as he came inside him swam in the lieutenant's mind. He gulped, pushing them away as he slowly made his way to one of the two chairs in front of Byakuya's desk. He lowered himself into the one closest to the door. Any hope that this would be a simple discussion of a new training regiment left him quickly. Kuchiki Taicho folded his hands on his desk professionally, leaning back in his chair.
