Chapter One
The sentry never saw the dark shadow ghosting across the field.
No one ever came this way at night so why not have a nap, his tired mind told him.
But on that very night it would be wrong.
The dark clad figure crept through the garden towards the gate. Keeping to the shadows, and unconsciously thinking out the way before taking the next few steps. Aware only of the fact that any second could mean the end of it. Any thing could happen within the next fifteen minutes.
‘No, mustn’t think of that,’ the figure grunted through gritted teeth. ‘They won’t find me.’
On the shadow moved through the field and past the sentry snoring on his stool, through the gate and on towards the tower. Instinct making it keep to the shadows, then it came to the open stretch around the tower. Being careful to blend in, the figure ran quietly to the next shadow under a tree. Doing this several times it made it to the tower without being spotted by a sentry.
Around it looked, trying to figure out a way in. Then it spotted the way. There was a window several meters up that looked easy to open. Checking the walls carefully and finding that it was roughly made and with plenty of small foot and handholds, the figure started climbing. Not straight up, but in a slight zig zag it made it’s way slowly but surely up. Suddenly it heard foot steps beneath it. Not daring to keep climbing it looked down, then suddenly it had the urge to sneeze. Quickly covering its mouth and nose the figure muffled the sound, but the sentry still heard. He looked left then right, but seeing nothing he shrugged then turned and walked off.
The figure breathed in suddenly aware that it had been holding its breath. Thanking god that the guards never look up, it then turned its head and kept climbing, up and up, higher and higher, then finally got to the right window.
Opening it slightly the figure checked inside the room to see if anyone was inside. The room was empty, so in it climbed and walked straight to the big wooden desk in the middle of the dark room. The desk drawers were opened and searched through quickly but thoroughly with things being shoved here and there.
Then just as it found what it was looking for, light started coming through the opening doorway. Shocked it turned to look for somewhere to hide. Too late! The figure stood up silently.
‘Who are you?’ the person asked.
Stepping out of the shadows another figure appeared and answered, ‘This is Arianna your majesty, she’s one of the orphans that came to the selecting today. She didn’t choose or get chosen by anyone though.’
‘Are you now girl?’ said the king. ‘May I ask how you got in here? And please let her answer for herself William.’
‘Uhh umm. Well … I came through the field out the back and snuck past the sleeping sentry, through the gate, the trees and across the courtyard. Then I climbed the tower wall,’ she said sounding shy but proud of herself, ‘And I kept to the shadows the whole time.’
‘Yes, she did and she was very good at moving unseen through the yard. Even I had a hard time trying to see her.’ William answered for her seeing that she was still recovering from the shock of the king and a ranger finding her. ‘I wouldn’t mind having her as an apprentice myself.’
‘Oh yes, yes. I agree quite soundly.’ Said the king. ‘You would make a great ranger. But let’s get on with this, Arianna read the note.’
Arianna looked at the paper, on it were nine words, “I would like to have Arianna as my apprentice.” Shocked Arianna looked at them, ‘Wha… what does this mean?’ She managed to stutter.
‘This means Arianna, that if you say yes, you will become the first girl to ever join the likes of us.’ said William the Ranger. ‘You would learn all our secrets and talents.’
‘Arianna it’s your choice but we need to know now. Because if you say yes you will have to go back and say your goodbyes now and pack because you would be leaving at dawn tomorrow.’ Said Jeremy the king.
‘Yes,’ said Arianna after thinking for a few minutes. ‘I’ll do it.’
‘Ok then, you best go pack and say goodbye,’ said William who was to be her teacher.
‘And Arianna could you please leave through the door,’ added the king.
‘Goodnight sir, goodnight your highness,’ she said then turned and left through the door.
As she walked back to the dorm rooms to say goodbye to her friends, she thought about her decision. Was it really the right one? Yes of course it was. Then why was she having second thoughts? She shook off the thoughts knowing they were only there because she didn’t know anything about what she was to be part of soon. But now she was going to become one. She thought as she paused to open the dorm house door and went up the old stone stairs. ‘I’ll feel better about it in the morning,’ she told herself.
‘Charlotte, Megan, Jonathan, Daniel, Morgan, are you awake?’ she said when she got in the sitting room. ‘I’ve got some news to give you and some goodbyes to say.’
‘What are you talking about?’ asked Morgan.
‘We should be the ones saying goodbye to you,,’ Megan added prissily.
‘Will you please just listen to me?’ Arianna said getting frustrated. ‘I’m going to be an apprentice!’
‘Whose apprentice?’ asked Jonathan always curious.
‘I’m going to be an apprentice to William the ranger!’ she replied excitedly. ‘And I’m going to be the first girl ranger ever! How does that sound?’
Shocked everyone looked at her.
‘You’re not really are you? This is just another one of your jokes isn’t it?’ asked Morgan.
‘No! It isn’t! And if you don’t believe me that’s just fine. I just wanted to say goodbye because I’m leaving at dawn, but now I don’t know why I even wanted to say goodbye to you lot,’ She yelled angrily and stormed off to her room to pack.
Later after she’d finished packing her few belongings she laid down on her bed and heard a knock on the door.
‘Come in,’ she said quietly knowing who it would be.
‘Are you ok Anna my darling?’ asked Charlotte, always the gentle one.
‘Yes I am, because I am going to be a ranger apprentice and I don’t care if they believe me or not!’ Arianna replied softly. ‘But you believe me don’t you Charlotte? You know that I never lie, you know that I always own up to my jokes.’
‘Of course I believe you Anna,’ replied Charlotte.
‘Oh my dear Sheri,’ said Anna. ‘Why do they never believe me? I always have to tell them several times over before they even think about believing me.’
‘Mon Cherie, no they don’t believe you yet, but they will when they get off their lazy backsides in the morning and come to get you up, but see with their own eyes that there is nothing, and no one, in your room,’ said Sheri with a mischievous twinkle in her eye.
‘Thankyou dear Sheri you always manage to cheer me up. I’ll miss you,’ replied Anna.
‘As I will you,’ said Sheri. ‘Now my darling when are you planning on getting up? I’ll get up with you and see you off.’
‘I’ll be getting up at half past five,’ replied Anna. ‘Goodnight.’
‘Night night Anna.’
