Chapter Two
The next morning, true to her word Sheri got up at half past five to say good bye to me. ‘Hey Anna wake up your going to be late if you don’t hurry.’ said Sheri who ended up having to wake me up.
‘So it is true,’ I said when I woke up. ‘I thought it might’ve just have been a dream.’
‘My darling, you must hurry or you will be late,’ said Sheri. ‘Remember you told me you promised the ranger you would be there by sunrise and you only have fifteen minutes left to get there. Now my dear I wrote them a note for you.’
‘Help me please Sheri, I need you to check the cupboards and do up my bag,’ I said while trying to do up my skirt and put up my hair at the same time. Eventually she succeeded and started on her shoes. ‘What did you write?’ she asked when she had finished the hard task of checking her bag and making the bed at the same time.’
‘I wrote, “Goodbye everyone, I hope you all have the heart to regret your mean words to me last night and recognize that what I said was not a joke or a lie. Seeing as you will all be getting up hours after I’ve left, I just wanted to say that there are only two people out of you that I will miss, they are Charlotte and Daniel. I will miss you both immensely as I expect that I shant see you as much as we are used to. You are my closest friends and shall be forever.”’
‘I like it.’
Three minutes later she was finally ready and said goodbye to Sheri and left. She jogged the whole way to the castle gates, their agreed meeting place and had a quick drink all the while looking for a sign of the ranger who had appeared out of thin air the night before. She looked at the horizon and realized why she couldn’t see him. It must’ve been another ten minutes till the sun would come out.
Then she heard the sound of footsteps and turned and saw the ranger walking towards her wearing a cloak that appeared to shimmering in the light of the lamps. She waited for him to get to her so that she could have a little more time to study him and his cloak.
‘Sir, do I have to wear a skirt when I’m a ranger or can I wear pants?’ Anna asked when he reached her and they started walking.
He thought for a while before answering her question. ‘I think that all depends on what you want to wear Arianna. And Arianna please call me Will.’
‘Will, it’s not just that I would like to wear pants, it’s that I only have one pair for when I sneak around, and I don’t want to keep my skirts. Well except my good one and my really old one in case I need them. Could you maybe get me some more pants? I mean it would raise fewer questions than me walking in and buying a pair.’ said Anna. ‘And please call me Anna, I thought your name was William.’
‘Ok Anna yes I will go and get you some more pairs of pants in the town near my cabin, no one would even be bothered asking questions about me because they’re used to me acting strange and buying unusual things.’ replied Will. ‘And by the way you will be sleeping in the spare bedroom in my cabin. It is small but I expect that you will still like it. My name is William but I like to be called Will for short.’
‘Thank you,’ replied Anna, starting to turn pink. ‘How far from here is your cabin?’
‘A days walk from here, a little less if we jog half way,’ said Will. ‘We will pass a couple of towns on the way and I’ll get you some lunch.’
‘Thank you again Will,’ said Anna. ‘I can’t wait to start learning, but there are some things I already know how to do, I just need to keep practicing. For example I know how to cook and ride although I’m not an expert it should be enough to get me through the start of training, but I know I’ve still got a lot to learn.’
