Chapter 2

School went by so slow today. Math was excruciating. I swear once I get out of school I do not want to see another equation in my life.

Shelly was talking on and on about how she had finally found the right pair of shoes to go with her prom dress. I wasn't that worried about prom. It wasn't my kind of thing. I always went to the dances ,but always ended up just hanging out with friends. Today in the hallways there was more security than normal ,everyone noticed because they kept eyeing us like they were looking for something. We were all kind of wondering what they were doing here ,but nobody said anything.

Once we get out of school I head to Shelly's car and wait for her there. It usually takes her about ten or more minutes to get outside. While sitting on the back of the trunk , I hear voices towards the gate leading out of the school. It was the guards arguing about something. I pull out my earphones and try to listen in.

"No ,we can't just keep people in here and let them die when they break through!"

"So you're saying we should let them out of the gates? "

"No.I am just saying there has to be a better way  than keeping them in here and not let the people have a chance."

" Yeah well ,Cory would never agree to it ,and you should know that by now. He does things his way and if you don't like it you can get out .I suggest keeping your mouth shut about this and acting like you agree with everything."

My brain was going crazy.What did I jus overhear? What was going on? Are they really hiding us from something? My immediate reaction is to tell Shelly as soon as she gets here ,but then I start to think if I should keep this to myself. As I'm thinking Shelly comes up and gets in her car. I follow her to the door.

" See anything interesting today?" Shelly asks.

Nows my chance to tell her what I overheard .

"Nope .Just another boring Monday."

The words flew out of my mouth before I had a chance to think.

That  night I had a dream and the guards words were just repeating over and over in my head. I finally woke up in a sea of sweat. I lay in my bed thinking about what I had overheard and just sit to myself and think. The government told us they put a gate around us so miners could have some privacy and get there work done. People who decided to be miners would be chosen to have no family. They had to live outside the gate and mine out coal and other natural resources. If you decided to be a miner , your parents might try to hide you and tell you to never say that again. They could try to hush you , but they always came out . What they didn't understand at the time ,is that the miners never come back out alive.
