The next day at one, we both arrived at the studio. Ms. Audrey said she was working with Tessa and Jake on their routine, and since ours was done, we could clean it up ourselves for today.
"Let's go over the section around the backbend." I suggested. You nodded and we got into position.
"So where are you from?" I asked as you swung me upside down.
"Alabama." You responded while lifting me upright.
"Thought so." I said as I turned on my heel.
"What made you think that?" You asked like it wasn't obvious.
"Your accent, of course." I jumped on your back.
"Why did you move here all the way from Alabama?"
"My dad got a job transfer. I didn't expect Canada to be this hot, to be honest."
"Well it is June. Just wait until winter, you'll be wishing snow boots boots came with space heaters." I laughed.
Looking back on it, it seems a little weird how we could dance and carry a conversation at the same time. But in the moment, it was a normal thing.
We continued to dance and talk for at least an hour before practice was over. We remembered every step and didn't even have to think about it.
"We should hang out some time. If we're going to be partners we should get to know each other." You said while wiping your face on the top of your shirt.
"Yea, I would like that." I smiled. I looked calm on the outside, well, I hope I did. But I was flipping out on the inside.
You walked towards the door, but stopped and hesitated.
"Why don't you give me your number so I can text you?" You turned back quickly as the words rushed out of your mouth like a waterfall.
"Sure!" I pulled a pen out of my bag and walked over to you, grabbing your hand and scrawling my number on it.
I heard a familiar horn honking from outside.
"That's my mom! Text me!" I pushed the glass door open and walked out to my black pick up truck.
"I will!" You called out from where you stood. As my mom pulled away I looked back at you. You had your phone in one hand and were looking at your other. I presumed you were adding me as a contact, and that made me smile.
"Is that your partner honey?" My mom asked as we started off down the road.
"Ya, Zach." I turned my gaze from a slowly growing smaller Potheir to face her.
"He's cute! You should date him."
"Mom!" My eyes widened and I could feel my cheeks heating up.
"Well, would you?" She pressed on.
"I am not having this conversation with you." I looked back out the window and crossed my arms.
Seconds later I heard a buzzing coming from my bag. I searched for my phone before pulling it out and reading the text.
*heyy it's Zach :)*
I smiled. Some people might have been weirded out by the fact that you texted not two minutes after I left the studio, but I wasn't. I thought you were sweet.
*hey :)*
We texted until one o'clock in the morning, just about the most random things. Even about what our favourite ice cream flavours were. You told me all about Alabama and the friends you had there. We talked about our dreams, what we wanted to be when we grew up. I hope you do become a doctor, if dancing doesn't work out. I think you'd be good at it.
