She covered her face with the hoodie she had on as she hid behind the tree. The boys passed and she didn't know if they had noticed or saw her not but she didn't have to wonder for long to find out because one of them cringed.
"Did you see that girl with the deformed face?"
"Yeah, I did. She sure was ugly."
They started laughing so Cheyenne took off running until her feet hit her front porch. As soon as she opened the front door her mother asked why she wasn't at school.
"Mom, I didn't even make to school! Two boys saw my face and called me ugly and were laughing! What do you think it's going to be like at school?"
Cheyenne said through her tears. Cheyenne mother sympathized with her then she told her she had to go.
"If you don't go a truant officer will pick you up and after you miss too many times you'll go to juvenile."
"I don't want that mom but what am I going to do about the other kids and not only that but what about my face?"
"Honey, I know it's difficult but we just moved here and your father just started his new job. He won't have insurance until 90 day trial is up. I know it's going to be hard on you at school. Just try to be patient, we'll try to do something about it."
"Okay mom" Cheyenne says.
"I'll tell you what. I'll call the school and tell them why you're late."
She got on the phone and dialed the schools number
"Hello this is Marcia Compton. I'm calling about my daughter Cheyenne Compton."
"Yes Mrs. Compton, she's supposed to start today isn't she?"
"Yes she is."
Marcia started explaining to the secretary what happened. The secretary told her to bring her to the office and she would see to it that Cheyenne got to her classes. The secretary apologized and told her she knows that people can be cruel at times so Marcia thanked her and hung up.
"Honey everything's fine. I'm to take you to the office and the secretary will take you to your class."
Cheyenne knew she had to do this but she didn't like it. It made her feel uneasy because she knew what the other kids reaction would be. She was 16 and had gone through this her whole life. Her father wouldn't keep a job long enough to get insurance and always had one excuse after the other for quitting. What made her mother think this job would be any different?
Cheyenne walked to class with the secretary. She knocked on Mr. Baldwin's door so he motioned for her to come in. The two boys from earlier recognized her and started talking so Mr. Baldwin told them to be quiet. Mr. Baldwin welcomed her to class and told Cheyenne she could sit in the back. Cheyenne could see all the kids talking and snickering except for one boy over in the right hand corner of the room. Mr. Baldwin called the class back to order and Cheyenne just lowered her head in reply.
"Now as I was saying. We are reviewing the capitals of each state and there will be a test on this next week." Mr. Baldwin says.
Lunchtime came so Cheyenne took hers and went outside. She noticed the boy from the corner of her class earlier in the day outside as well. She walked over and sat under the tree then he notices her so he got up and wondered over to her.
"So my names Brad. I understand yours is Cheyenne?"
"You got it." She said
"Have a seat. Unless you're scared to?"
