She half smiled at me, smoke swirling lazily around her. It smelled like strawberries more than tobacco. I'd never seen hookah other than in Alice in Wonderland so I wasn't exactly sure what it was all about. I gave her a smile back, with warmness filling my body from the alcohol.
"What are you drinking?" the boy asked, making a feeble attempt to begin conversation.
"I don't know but it's making me feel really confused." Giggling kept punctuating every single thing I tried to say. All pauses were filled with laughter. My lips buzzed. I felt myself lean toward the girl, involuntarily. The boy caught me.
"You ever drank before?" he asked.
"Nope."
"Ever tried hookah?"
"Nope."
He grabbed a hose and gave a demonstration. "Easy, he assured. "Breathe in, breathe out."
Drunken me was less than elegant. The breath was fast and came out as though I had blown out a candle. I frowned. I'd wanted it to look pretty like the girl's.
She'd been watching. "What's your name?" she asked. Her voice was low and reminded me of coffee in tone.
"Madison."
"Madison," she began. My own name sounded like poetry on her tongue. "You have to be slower. Really taste it."
I nodded and tried again, slower. I could feel the vapor fill my lungs this time. The fruity flavor touched my tongue. I let it go slowly. It looked much prettier, like how food coloring looks in water.
I could see the smirk slide onto her face like melted chocolate. "Bet you liked that, huh?"
I nodded. The boy was trying to talk to me but I hadn't really heard him. My focus wasn't good to begin with, but she had my attention. He was persistent though so I turned back to him.
"This is my first party ever," I said, smiling behind my relaxed eyes. "I think I really like it."
He raised his hands behind his head with wide eyed and a smile. "Whhhaaaat? First party? No way."
"Yeah."
"Well in that case, let's live it up, Madison," the girl said on my other side. "Let's try something." I turned around to her again to see her taking a hit from the hookah. She turned back to me with intense eyes. Then she turned to me and put a hand gently on my cheek. Her eyes closed like satin curtains as she leaned closer. Then her lips pressed against mine with strawberry flavor that filled my mouth. I let my eyes closed for just a second. And then her tongue flicked mine. I pushed her back, confused. Smoke poured from my mouth.
"Holy shit," the hissed through laughter. His eyes were like fifty cent pieces. Others had turned too.
I wrapped my arms around myself, unsure of what I'd done. My stomach twisted. "I don't feel good."
The vomit came up, luckily in just a slight spill, but I knew I wasn't done. I felt myself being dragged into a bathroom. I was too disoriented to know who was there. I put my head over the toilet, hugging it so I didn't fall off.
"I got her," the coffee voice assured someone else, I assumed was the boy.
Hands gathered my hair, dragging over my ears. Movement was nauseating. I could feel tears from heaving spilling from my eyes.
Next I remember Adri was putting me in my own back seat. "You're just dry heaving now. I'll check on you in a bit."
I nodded as best I could and the door closed.
