Chapter 4

*Still Luke’s POV*

I decided that it wasn’t the best idea for Molly to go to school; she was so upset over something about her Dad. It must be something serious. I decided to go to school to tell the principal that Molly and I won’t be attending school because she wasn’t feeling up to it. He was very understanding; this is why I love our principal.

As I walked Molly to Starbucks I had my arm around her shoulder holding her close to me, she held onto my shirt with one hand and rested her head on me. We walked slowly but I didn’t really mind, it was comforting having her so close to me.

I can’t be thinking of her more than just friends can I? I only met her yesterday. She is just a friend. I know she wouldn’t feel the same way back.

We arrived at Starbucks, I told Molly to go and choose a seat. She went to the furthest one and I ordered us a hot chocolate each and a big slice of chocolate brownie, I grabbed two spoons for the brownie and walked over to her.

“Here we go,” I said setting the things down.

“Thanks but I’m not hungry…” She mumbled resting her head on her arms that were on the table.

“Molly, please?” I said, sitting a hand on her arm, she looked up and I gave her a pleading look. She soon gave way and sat up with a huff. “Now, if you don’t mind, can you explain what happened before?” I asked, hoping to get a positive answer.

“Do I have to?” I nodded at her, “Well I guess seeing as you are my only close friend and I trust you…” She began, that made me smile, she gave me a faint smile back and took a sip of her hot chocolate. “It started about three years ago, when I lived in Melbourne. My Mum would work nights and sleep during the day; Dad was the opposite and watched me during the night. I was obviously going to school during the day. One day my Dad came home drunk, Mum was obviously at work so she didn’t know.” She took a deep breath before continuing. “He suddenly got really abusive, yelling things at me, saying how I was worthless, I meant nothing to him, and I shouldn’t be here. He made me do all this work for him every night from then. He blamed me for getting fired so he would be drinking all day and come home when Mum went to work. So she was oblivious on what was happening.” She had tears at the brim off her eyes, so I moved into the booth beside her and hugged her closely to me.

“You don’t have to continue…” I said, noticing it’s probably hard on her. But she shook her head.

“No, you deserve to know. This went on for a while, I soon started to stop speaking, and I kept to myself and never let anyone in. My Mum soon saw the bruises on me when she quit that job and came home for the first night, she demanded for me to tell her who has been doing this to me. That was when Dad burst through the door. Drunk again, he was cursing and calling my name. Mum stood up in front of him and looked between us; she then knew who was doing it. She told me to go upstairs and pack, I did as she told. I heard them fighting downstairs, and then I heard a smack and a thump. I squeaked and ran down stairs to find my Mum holding her cheek and lying on the ground. I snapped right there and then.” She looked at me, “Sorry, I’m rambling. I should really get to the point.”

“It’s okay, I got the base line. So this has been happening ever since you were 14? That’s why you moved here?” I asked, she nodded and took a sip of her drink which was probably getting cold.

“Yeah, well when I saw Mum like she was, I grabbed the closes thing- which happened to be a telephone- I threw it at him, not actually meaning to hit him in the head and making him unconscious.” She let out a small giggle, it was quite cute her giggle. “But this was a year ago; I and Mum have been on the road since. We have gotten so close over time, and Dad is now in Jail… For a very long time…” She looked up at me and surprisingly she wasn’t crying anymore she had a smile; which made me return one back.

“You are one of a kind Molly…” I said squeezing her with my arm which was still around her, during her story I already ate half of the brownie. I offered her the rest which she gladly took.

I watched her, looking into those gorgeous dark brown eyes. They were no longer dull, seeing as she got that off her back she seemed a lot happier.

“Hey, when you finish that can I take you somewhere?” I asked, she nodded and finished everything off and stood up. I stood up with her, and held my hand out for her. She gladly took it and followed me out of the place after I left a tip.

“Where are we going?” she asked, softly squeezing my hand which was currently still holding mine. I don’t have those feelings for her, she is just a friend.

That’s what you want to believe.

“Just to the park, to get things off our minds” I said smiling to her and skipping away, making her follow me.

This girl is one of a kind, anyone would be lucky to have her as their own. I just hope they would treat her right.

*Molly’s POV* (finally)

I just told Luke about my Dad, it was really hard at first but as soon as I finished I felt a whole lot better. He is such a great guy, the best friend anyone who can have.

I actually haven’t seen him around with anyone else since I got here. I wonder who his other friends are…

“Hey Luke, who are the other lucky people you call friends?” I ask as we arrive at the park, I jumped on the closest swing and looked at him. He had a read-less expression on his face, he look unsure.

“Uh, I haven’t really let anyone in like I’ve let you in… I am more the unsocial type to be honest.” He said joining me on the swing beside mine, he looked down and kicked a few wood chips around as he slowly swung on the swing.

“Oh.” Was all I could really say, I felt really lucky but also upset. Why is he so antisocial? And I wonder if anything caused it?
