By the end of the day, I had decided that my Psychology class would be my haven. Our teacher was a squirrely man in his 50's with large round ears. His name was Mr. Mutt and he had a daughter in her 20's and his wife passed away roughly five years ago. He seemed contempt in his life; he smiled a lot.
After I had packed my things at the end of class, I walked out a set of double door to the student parking lot where Miles had parked his car. He wasn't there when I arrived, so I waited. I leaned up against the car and pulled out my book and lost myself in a world of fantasy.
The book I was reading was about a young girl who, after he sixteenth birthday, finds out she actually a fairy queen of a secret magical world. She's taken from her human home to the other world where she is reunited with a family she has no recollection of. She then discovers evil mischief going on so she must band together with her sister and a suspicious elf to save the kingdom. I had read the book several times before, but it was one of those books I could never get tired of no matter how much I read it.
"Hey, you're that chick that Miles introduced us to."
I looked up to see Frank and Alice standing in front of me. I clutched the book close to my chest and cleared my throat. "Yeah, Lydia."
He nodded and looked at Alice who nodded back. "Lydia. Are you coming to the Club House?"
I furrowed my brow and pointed my thumb to the car, "I was just getting a ride home."
They both looked disappointed for a split second but it was gone as fast as it had come. Alice readjusted her grip on Frank and Frank pat her on the head, "Well we should get going. We'll see you around Lydia."
I waved goodbye to them and returned to my book: ...I drew out my blade and held to Draif's neck. I watched his Adam's Apple bob as swallowed nervously. I knew from the start that he couldn't be trusted. He was as dirty and deceitful as the man who raised him.
"I'm so glad you waited!"
This time when I looked up Miles was walking towards me. He looked a little frustrated. "Is everything alright?" I asked.
He shrugged and unlocked the car. "Nothing to worry about. Just got into an argument with Amber. Sorry, I'm late."
I waved him off, "Don't even worry about it. I have nothing I need to do today anyways."
He looked up, a little bit of excitement in his eye, "Nothing?"
"N-nothing," I stuttered nervously. We slipped into the car and sat there for a minute.
"Would you like to hang out with me and the crew?" He asked starting the car.
"At the Club House?"
"How do you know about that?"
"Frank asked me if I was going."
"Frank?"
"Yeah."
"..."
"..."
"So?"
"So what?"
He laughed, "Do you want to go?"
I thought about saying no and just going home and pigging out on chocolate chip ice cream and then maybe passing out watching cartoons. I wasn't much of a social person and I didn't even know these kids. Every bit of my anxiety was telling me to say no.
I nodded a little, "Sure. Why not?"
He beat the steering wheel musically and let out a whoop of excitement. "You like the Club House," He smiled. "Frank, Thomas and I built it."
