That night I curl up on Tobias’s sofa. I gave my bed up to an Erudite girl. I spend most of my nights here anyway so it’s not much to give up my dorm bed. Plus, I’m comfortable here and Tobias is only a few metres away.

“Tobias.” I whisper in the darkness.

“Yeah?” He replies

“Are you asleep?”

He laughs

“Tris, that’s the stupidest question ever. I’m TALKING to you!” He says and I can tell he’s smiling.

He comes over to me.

“Move up.” He says and I tuck my feet up under me. I pull the duvet up around my neck. It’s cold in the apartment and I shiver in my vest top and pyjama bottoms. Tobias puts an arm around me and I huddle into him, shivering.

“Go to sleep Tris. We have knife-throwing tomorrow. We can’t be tired and miss.” He says

“Ok.” I mumble sleepily

Tobias starts to get up to go back to his bed but I put my arms around him.

“Stay?” I ask and he smiles.

“Sure.”

He sits back down and I rest my head on his chest and fall asleep.

I wake with a start after a nightmare about Will. When aren’t they about Will? I’m shaking and Tobias strokes my hair, tells me to go back to sleep. Tells me what he always tells me. That he’ll fight the bad dreams off if they come.

“With what?” I mumble blearily, as I always do

“My bare hands.” Comes the familiar reply

“Obviously.” I whisper and sink back into sleep
