Good, evil... Right, wrong... For every right thing, there is its opposite. But sometimes, we don't choose it. Sometimes, we were born with such curse; Curse that kills our little soul's hope.
Past Time
"Mom, I am scared!" whispered Ray with fear in her eyes. Her mom smiled and held her hand tightly insuring her that everything will be fine and it is time for her to fly now. Ray has been so afraid from flying unlike other fairies. Yes, Ray liked adventure and new stuff but every hero has something to fear and for Ray, she hated flying.
Her wings weren't helping at all. Unlike all fairies, Ray had special wings. They looked enchanting. They were almost like petals; Sky-color-like petals.
And with that came the worst part. Her wings can't fly. It's as if it can fly ground level but is a failure at sky level.
"Mom... I don't think I can do it." Ray backed off from the edge of the cliff. They say this cliff gives luck to new fairies that were born. But no luck went with her especially her wings. It is as if she was… cursed.
Ray's mother sighed and smiled motherly at her. "It's okay, my dear. I know that you're still not ready to try to use your wings yet, but I am sure that one day you will be able to do so!"
She stroked her daughter's hair softly as she hugged her in her arms. "You just need to believe in yourself and be confident enough to fly. When that happens, I am sure you will finally be able to fly, and your wings will color the air and sky with their stunning colors."
And with those encouraging words, Ray's mom kissed her daughter's forehead sweetly. Ray just kept looking up at her and was lost deeply in her thoughts.
She really wished that she was able to fly, to show all the other fairies that she could fly as high as she can. And most importantly, she wanted to make her mother be proud of her about finally flying.
But it's just as if her feet were stuck to the ground and wouldn't leave the ground. It's not that she was heavy or anything, she was pretty light-weighted like all the other fairies. But... whenever she tried to fly, her wings wouldn't lift her even an inch above floor level. Again, it's as if her wings were truly cursed.
If only she knew what the problem was, only then would she have some hope, and would be able to fly like all the other fairies around her. She felt jealous because all the others succeeded in flying and she didn't. Instead of flying, she had to use her legs to walk around to get to wherever she wanted to go. And being a fairy with a lot of responsibilities plus useless wings, it was tiring as hell.
Making a firm decision, Ray agreed on not giving up and trying one more time. They say 'The third gives the luck' or something like that. Ray held her mother's hand tightly and said with a determined look "I will do it, mom!" Her mom's eyes went up to meet Ray's. Her mom smiled gladly and stepped out of the way. "I will be there when you fall!" Her mom gave her an encouraging push.
Ray smiled knowing that someone got her back and run to the cliff with full speed. And that wasn't the most pleasant decision she did. As she jumped off from the cliff, she spread her wings. Balancing herself, she tried to fly but no luck. As she was falling down and down, and by accident, her wings scratched the cliff making a pointed rock cut through one wing of hers as she was barely near the ground.
Screaming pain, Ray hugged herself knowing that this might be the end for her. Hopes ran away. Fear crept in her chest. And by that, she never knew how to spread her wings and fly. To feel free was something out of her reach. Something she will never experience.
Present Time
Ray gasped as she sat up from her bed. Her heart raced and her pants were quite audible. Sweats all over her face, she clenched the blankets as she tried to get to her calm zone again. A bad nightmare again, she thought. It had been a month and she hadn't stop feeling like that. Her fairy senses knew something was going to be out of place but she just couldn't make it out.
Ray sighed as she rested her head down again on her pillow to get some more sleep. Tomorrow was going to be a busy day for her since she was going to start her second semester in her high school.
She was excited to meet her friends again, especially her best friend.
To tell you the truth, she enjoyed studying at Fairytopia High School, everything about it was perfect. But the thing she hated the most is the flying classes she couldn't join. All she was able to do was just sit around outdoors as she watched in awe how her other fairy friends trained their wings to fly perfectly.
If only I was able to fly like them..., Ray thought.
She once again closed her eyes hoping for some sleep as she drifted slowly to sleep.
Next Day
"Ray? Honey, time to wake!"
"Some more sleep, mamoun..." Ray mumbled barely making her mom hear her.
"Oh stop being a lazy head and rise up and shine!"
Ray's mom tried to wake her daughter up to get ready for school, but to no avail, Ray was being a lazy bum and wasn't going to wake up at all. Let's say Ray wasn't a morning person.
"Alright then! You're the one who forced me to do this!" An idea popping in her head, Ray's mom smirked as she opened the window curtains, allowing the bright sunlight to light the whole room and making it shine especially on Ray.
"Argh, the light! It buuuuuuuurns!" Ray whined like a 5-year old girl as she covered her head over with her blanket. Her mom giggled as she pushed over her blanket and made her sit up. "Rise and shine, sweetheart!"
"Shine is for you, Sunshine!" With a smirk, Ray moved her hair away from her eyes. Ray's mom was a sun fairy controlling when the sun would shine and where especially it would shine. Again, the mother giggled softly ruffling her daughter's hair.
Ray rubbed her eyes sleepily and blinked a bit to make her eyes get adjusted to the light around the room. She yawned as she rested her head again on her mother's shoulder and hugged her arm.
"Can I skip school today...? It's the first day and we won't even take anything…" Ray said with a puppy face.
Ray's mom shook her head as she got up from the bed and pulled her daughter to her feets. "Nu-uh! No skipping school in our family!"
Ray sighed in defeat, knowing that her mom had a mind of her own and would NEVER allow her to skip school, not even in a million years. But she was kind of happy because her mom was the only one who stayed by her side even after knowing that Ray has no future in flying.
