Chapter 3
Unconsciously, I must have curled up to Aaron when I'd been sleeping because my arms had wrapped themselves around his left. Realizing our slightly compromising position, what with his head on mine and my arms around him, I slowly opened my eyes. He shifted, and I shut my eyelids. For a moment, I thought he was going to shrug me off, which I wouldn't have minded, but he surprised me by pulling the blanket from the compartments in front of us. I quickly closed my eyes and felt his arm gently maneuver around me to place a warm blanket on me. It was so comfortable in that moment, that, instead of thinking about his gesture, I fell back asleep.
" Phoebe. Phoebe. Phoebe." With each and every one of my names, I received a poke in the ribs.
" Aaron, you better have a pretty great reason for waking me up." I mumbled, still groggy.
" I'm bored," he said, dragging the words out.
" I'm going back to sleep."
" Phoeebee...."
"Aaaaaaronnn..."
" Phoeeeeeeebeeeee..." He whined, bouncing in his seat like a five year old.
" That's it, I'm going back to sleep." I deadpanned right before his eyes turned wide. He pouted out his full lips, I groaned before relenting to his puppy dog face. " You're very lucky to be seated next to a pushover."
His smile widened as I smoothed myself out.
" What time does our train stop again?"
" In half an hour."
Both of us sat there, feeling awkward due to the fact that our "friendship" would be ending in a few hours.
" So..."
" So."
" Where are you going after the train stops?"
" L.A. to see my aunt. How about you?"
" L.A. too, to stay with my dad. Maybe we'll run into each other?" He said with what I thought was... hope in his voice? But why would he be hopeful that he'd run into me? I looked back into his eyes after turning away so he couldn't see me blush.
After comfortable small talk for a while, the train stopped and the captain spoke.
" Please remain seated as the train comes to a complete stop before gathering your personal items and proceeding off the train. Thank you for boarding Coast to Coast Trains. Hope to see you next time."
" So."
" So...' And we were back to that.
" Do you maybe, wanna meet up in Los Angeles sometime?" My cheeks stretched into a wide grin.
" I'm not sure, I'll have to check my ever so busy schedule." I said coyly. " But," I sighed as if this was a major inconvenience for me. " I guess I could fit you in." I finished dramatically. He gave me a cheeky smile and took the phone from my outstretched hand and punched in his number. I did the same and we started packing up quickly since the conductor was waiting for us at the exit.
We exited the station, the both of us smiling like idiots. My mind drifted to my first date, Max Reese. I was fourteen and overjoyed. We walked to a small restaurant not too far from where we lived. I thought it was perfect at the time. Until, the next week later, he left me for Joanna Scott. Not the brightest time in my love life but, oh well. The came Sean, my first "boyfriend". I don't know, we both broke it off from mutual agreement that we just didn't work. Two boyfriends and one heartbreak later, I'd fallen for Dave. Dave was my last boyfriend, and long story short, he cheated on me. He hadn't tried to hide it either. When I confronted him about it, he just shrugged and apologized. I broke up with him that minute.
As Aaron and I walked, I saw my aunt Lisa and my cheeks widened until I thought they would burst. She quickened her pace and hugged me tightly. I squeezed back until she took a look at Aaron and asked me about him. I told her I'd tell her later and waved goodbye to Aaron.
