Chapter 2

" Are you lost?" The boy repeated, looking concerned now. I shook myself out of my dazed state.

" Yeah, I'm supposed to be in 13A. But somehow, I ended up here in the C and Ds." I finally replied.

" Oh hey, I'm in 13B. So I sit next to you?" He questioned and I nodded. My paranoid side wondered if it really was a coincidence that he found me and just so happened to be sitting next to me.

My face must have betrayed me because he quickly assured me that it was, in fact, a coincidence. I decided after a moment's hesitation that he was telling me the truth.

" Okay, so we know that the C-Ds are that way, and past that is the luggage storage. So if we walk to the other side of the Cs we will find that the A-Bs are up HERE!!!" He waved at the staircase that I now noticed said" A-B, 10-20, and 20-30". We climbed the stairs to find our rows awaiting us.

" Tickle me pink, I am impressed." I drawled in a southern accent and laughed along with him. We arrived at our seats. Prepping for the long ride, we sat down and got ourselves situated.

Smiling to myself, I took the window seat. I thought of last summer when I went to Aunt Lisa's by road tripping with my dad.

After a short minute of awkward silence, he spoke.

" So, I'm Aaron Hayes. I'm going to Los Angeles to stay with my dad before I go off to college in the fall. I play guitar and my favorite color is green." he smiled, apparently satisfied with himself. I just looked at him blankly. What was I supposed to do with that information? It took me a minute to realize that his expectant smile meant that he wanted me to share as well.

" Oh! I-- umm, my name is Phoebe Hudson and I'm going to LA to visit my aunt for the summer. I like to sing and write songs sometimes and my favorite color is purple." I stumbled over my words, still slightly caught off guard.

" That's cool, what kind of songs?"

" Songs."

" I know, what kind?"

" Just songs..."

It continued for awhile before we gave up on each other because we were laughing too hard.

" So, does that mean I win?" I grinned victoriously.

" No, I'll get it out of you later..." He narrowed his eyes in mock evilness.

" So how about you?  What kind of songs do you play on your guitar?"

" Just random songs."

" Like what?"

" You probably wouldn't know them."

" I might."

" Nahh..."

" Well, how am I supposed to know if I know them or not if you don't tell me?" I probed.

" Pollen and Salt? By Daphne Loves Derby?"

"No, who's that?"

" The Sounds of Silence?"

I stared at him, and he gave me an " I told you so" look.

" Don't look at me like that..." I trailed off, unable to defend myself. " This reminds me of this one time, when my teacher gave me that look for not knowing what the capitol of Nebraska was in fourth grade."

" Lincoln. The capital of Nebraska is Lincoln."

" Well, I know it now..." I gave him a look and he just chuckled.

" Where are you from?"

I blinked. We both got on the train in New York. He and I both got on in New York. I just assumed that we were both from New York. I voiced this and he just chuckled.

" I'm from Massachusetts. I came from there to New York. I had a family member drop me off here." He explained when he saw my face.

"OHHH, okay. So... favorite food?" Aaron seemed caught off guard by the sudden change of topic.

But he didn't have to think about it for too long because he quickly replied, " Pizza. Without a doubt, pizza."

" Sushi, at least most sushi. There are some that I can't handle."

"Favorite..." We continued exchanging favorites until we got hungry. I learned that he loved dogs, cashews, minty gum, lemonade, music, only wore blue denim jeans, and hated ducks because one of them attacked him when he was four. In return, he learned that I too loved dogs, macadamia and almond nuts, ate all kinds of gum, loved root beer, art and music, and hated geese because one had stolen my hat when I was smaller. I mulled these things over as we walked down to the diner type bar next to their "restaurant".

I ordered a veggie omelet and a glass of milk from the man who gave me a semi strange look before smiling then walking away to bring me my lunch.

" You ordered an omelet. For lunch." Aaron shook his head then told the waiter what he wanted.

" What'd you get?"

"Pancakes." He smiled cheekily at me when I rolled my eyes, but I was smiling. I studied his face when he read the menu once more because he forgot to buy a drink. His light playful eyes scanned the menu and I noticed that while they were, blue grey, they had the tiniest tint of green. He snapped his head up and told the guy to make him a mango pomegranate- pineapple apple smoothie.

"Is that even a drink on the menu?" I asked him, incredulous.

" Nope." he said, popping the "p".

After we ate, we talked some more about the types of music that each of us listened to normally. Eventually, we both got tired and started talking nonsense.

" Aaron?"

" Mmmmmm, Phoebe?" he murmured, his eyes fluttering open and closing again.

" I'm sleepy..." But I never finished my sentence because the next thing I knew, I was curling up into a ball. Yawning, my eyelids drooped before shutting completely.
