Reed Boyce, or known affectionately as "Pretty Boy" by his friends, was just a normal resident of Mystic Falls, Virginia. He had a mundane life, mundane hobbies, and a mundane family. He wasn't special in any way or to anyone; except two people. Jeremy Gilbert and Tyler Lockwood. He was loved by both, albeit in different ways. Jeremy and Reed were like brothers, whereas Tyler and Reed were almost-lovers. They'd had a fling in sophomore year but Reed had cut it off, not wanting to get hurt. The boy was unaware of the Lockwood boy's lingering feelings.

Reed was seen as a bad influence to Jeremy by Elena, Jeremy's sister, because of the fact that he liked to experiment with drugs, so he could only see the Gilbert boy during school hours. The two had a bond that never wavered since Reed had been the only one there for Jeremy when his parents died and the two connected like Reed had never done with anybody else. Reed was disliked by Elena heavily and would be on the receiving end of her death glares if he was even in the presence of Jeremy. Reed was never afraid of her but he wasn't one for confrontation.

When a new boy by the name of Stefan Salvatore rocks up in Mystic Falls, Reed discovers his normal existence isn't so normal after all.
