unrequited love (very short story)

the one that got away

walking around the corridors with my best friend, waiting for the day to end. i want to sleep so badly... we suddenly stopped when Laila held my hand with a small amount of pressure

"close your eyes." she commanded, and i oblique 

we always do this whenever Laila see's him with his long time girl. i guess she see's that i'm still hurting, that i'm still not over him, even though i repeatedly told her otherwise. but still i'm thankful she's like this. 

"are they gone yet?" i asked still closing my eyes

"yeah," i smiled and i felt her do the same

i opened my eyes and saw a worrid Laila looking dead in the eyes

she breath in sharply and asked me "you're not over him, are you?" 

i faked a smile "i dont know anymore" i walked past her and went straight ahead to our room

"of course you know Kayleigh! you just dont want to.." she said behind me as her last statement faltered, i faced her 

"look, we have a whole day ahead of us, can we just not discuss about this? just for now, please?" 

it took her a moment. she rolled her eyes. "fine,--but just for now."

i nodded

our classes seemed like a blur to me, teachers coing in and out our rooms made me sleepy. our school is small and only a few students come here.it is a school wherein  a class is assigned in a certain room and sticks there all the way until school ends. in short they stay there for the whole school year.

"he, i'm just going to get a snack. want me to get you something?"

"i'm good thank you"

"okay"

(graduation)

oh look it's graduation day already. honors come up to the stage as medals are given. pretty much just usual things done in a graduation ceremony....

"congrats! you're a graduate!" Laila hugged me and i returned it

"i could say the same." i chuckled

"yeah well, anyways i was just going to remind you that we're off t L.A. tomorrow, and i already packed...." she trailed off sadness lacing her words. 

"that's okay Lai! we can still talk through web. and besides they say that the signals are vry high in New York"

"right. i forgot you got accepted in NYU... oh wait did  i?" we both laugh at her stupid attemp of a joke..

i looked behind her, i dont know why but i regretted that i did. i saw him leaving in a van hugging her girl goodbye, i immediately closed my eyes...

Laila hugged me when she noticed what i was doing

"its okay Kay, you'll get through this"

"i know"

"kayleigh!" somebody called

i looked up and saw my brother calling me to go with him, we were probably going

we let go of the hug "i'll better go, you take care okay?" Laila said as she bid her goodbye, i nodded in response
