Prologue

 “Keep running.”

I kept thinking to myself.

“Don’t stop. Don’t look back”

And that’s just what I did, I ran. There was no looking back…how could I? After all that happened? The rain kept pelting down and the wind howled, showing clearly the anguish I locked away in my heart. I was becoming completely drenched, but I was thankful for the rain. It washed away the perspiration and the tears trickling down my face. Remembering the last few hours …NO! I mustn’t think about them right now. I knew if I did, I would just break down and start crying. I had nowhere to go, but I must keep running. My breathing became more laboured and there was a wrenching feeling in my stomach, but I remembered my mother’s last words. “Whatever you do Jane, you must not be caught. Promise me…promise me you’ll keep yourself safe. You won’t get caught. Promise me”

“I won’t let you down mamma. I won’t…”

So I ran. Out of my town, leaving everything I had ever known behind.  Not knowing where I was going, not knowing what lay ahead, not knowing whether I was heading towards safety or peril. My breath was coming in shorter now, and I knew I would need to rest before long. I could not continue this for long. I looked around for a safe place. A location with exits…in case I needed to make a quick getaway. Scanning the area quickly, I noticed a forest perching on a hill just in front of a river. The trees would provide me with a cover and the water would help thwart my pursuers, that is if they were still following me. Coming to this verdict, I swiftly made up my mind and sprinted for the stone bridge.

Just as I was beginning to climb the hill, I heard a gunshot, followed by the whizzing of a bullet a few centimetres away from my ear.  Shocked, I whirled around in disbelief. What I saw not only astonished me, but devastated me. The whole town was tracking me! Looking at them, I could see the faces of my friends and my neighbours. I saw Mary, my best friend – in fact we were so close, I believed her to be my sister. I saw Mrs. Hawking, the friendly baker across the street who always gave me a fresh bun as I passed her on my way to school.  Jed, our gardener, stood a few paces away. However, gone was the pleasant smile on his face. Looking before me, I could only see the bleak faces of the people I once called my friends.

“Jane, we need you to come back with us. Come with us, and I promise, we won’t shoot you. However, if you fight, I cannot guarantee your safety.” Shouted Mr. Featherstone, the mayor.

“Promise me you won’t get caught.” My mother’s last words flittered through my mind.

Remembering her words, I quickly looked for a way out.

‘Use the river.’

I looked at the water, and began gathering my energy.

‘Become one with the water. It is just an extension of you.’

Palms facing forewords, I began lifting them – the energy flowing through me.  The water began to rise before my eyes, and the screams of the townsfolk followed.

“Jane! Jane, what are you doing? Don’t make us do something we’ll regret!” Mr. Featherstone bellowed.

“Then don’t do it Mr. Featherstone. Let me leave and I won’t harm anyone. If you try to stop me, I may just have to flood the whole town. “

“Jane… Jane how could you? The Jane I knew would never harm anybody, let alone the people she’s known for her whole life!” Sobbed Mary.

That one sentence nearly broke me.  And all I could do was stand at the bottom of the hill watching my friend. I could feel my resolve disappearing as I looked at her face.

‘CONCENTRATE! Remember your promise.’

Recalling my promise and the events that took place just a few hours ago allowed my determination to remain steadfast. Ignoring my automatic response to Mary’s distress and praying that the town would not call my bluff, I responded.

“That Jane’s dead. Don’t force me; believe me when I say I WILL flood the town. Leave now.”

As the townsfolk just stood there, stupefied; I knew I had to do something, or they’d see right through my lie!

‘Fog.’

With right hand still holding the river water aloft, I brought my other hand down. Closing my eyes, I imagined a fog bank. Raising my other hand and sticking my index finger in the air, I began swirling the atmosphere.  Keeping the image firmly planted in my head, I opened my eyes and saw everyone slowly disappearing in the mist. Lowering my right hand, I allowed the water to fall back into the river bed. Once the fog was thick enough, I allowed myself to turn around and make my way up the hill amidst the shouts of my friends.

‘They will be fine.’
