The first thing I noticed were the emerald eyes. Bright green; even in the dark. And they were staring right back at me, confused. Then the telltale red hair covered the eyes, and I realized that this was the boy. Feeling my anger grow again, I opened my mouth to yell at him. But before I could get a word out, he spoke.
“Why are you following me?” he asked, irritated.
I just stared at him, dumbstruck. Frustrated, I felt like slapping some sense into him.
“I’m sorry. I just spent the past few days nursing you back into health and when I didn’t find you in your bed, I came after you to make sure you were alright. I didn’t know that would make you so angry. So sorry for inconveniencing you, you’re welcome to leave.” I said scathingly, and turned around to leave. Taking a step, I found that I couldn’t budge. The arms were still enclosing me, stopping me from leaving.
“I didn’t mean it like that. I’m always grouchy when I’m hungry… as far as I know anyways. Which is why I wasn’t in bed, I was looking for food for us. Believe me, I was going to come back, and thank you properly… right after I got some food.” He said softly. Then taking a step forward, he whispered in my ear. “Please forgive me?” His breath tickled my ear and I don’t know why, but my heart started beating erratically when he did that. I took a deep breath to calm myself but found it hard to breathe while standing so close to him. Pushing myself out of his arms, I turned around just in time to see the smile slip into a confused look.
“All you had to do was ask for some food, I have plenty.” I said crossly.
“I didn’t want to burden you even more than I already have.” He said, scratching the back of his head.
Sighing, I simply walked past him, stopping only to say “your wound needs to be looked at again. Come back whenever you’re ready to”.
I wasn’t ready to forgive him for scaring me just yet, but I also didn’t want to be in his presence for the moment. I walked back to the riverbank as quickly as possible, and began making a small fire. Gathering the supplies, I shook my head, trying to understand why I had such a strong reaction to him. I normally wasn’t so sensitive to other people, so why him? Why did my heart beat so quickly when he came closer, why did I find it so hard to breathe when I was in his arms? Groaning, I sat down and put my head in my hands. I could not be attracted to him! This was not in the plan; I had to get rid of him as soon as possible. I would not only be putting myself in danger, but also him if I didn’t leave him soon.
‘As soon as I make sure he’s alright, I’m going to leave. When he comes back, I’m going to act normal, I’m going to act aloof, and I’m not going to let him know that I am attracted to him. This is dangerous Jane. You know you can’t allow yourself to get close to him’ I thought to myself. I knew that there was no future for us… why was I even thinking about a future?! I barely knew him! What is wrong with me? I let out another groan and shook my head in my hands, trying to talk some sense into myself.
“I truly am sorry you know.” A soft voice came from my left. I slowly lifted my now blushing head from my hands and turned towards the voice, seeing his repentant face.
“I know, I guess I get grouchy too when I’m hungry. Why don’t you come sit down and I’ll get you some food before I look at your arm.” I said, smiling.
His expression grew baffled as he took in my personality change. He slowly came toward me and sat beside me, staring into the fire. I reached over into my bag and pulled out half a loaf of bread, cheese and a small glass bottle of milk. Breaking the bread and cheese in half, I passed it to him and silently handed him the bottle of milk. He looked at me incredulously and said “you packed milk… how did you manage to not break the bottle yet!”
“My mother packed it for me, I didn’t even know it was in there until this morning” I said, shrugging my shoulders. His eyes grew bigger as he saw that I wasn’t lying and quickly opened the bottle and chugged half of the milk down, just to prove to himself that it really was there.
“This the first time I had milk in about a year! That was amazing, thank you.” He said, handing me the half full bottle. I shook my head and passed it back to him.
“You need your energy. Drink it all, I’m pretty sure I have more in my bag.”
He raised his eyebrows, asking quietly if I was sure, and I nodded my head in return. “Seriously, just drink it.” I said to him.
He smiled back at me, that one smile changing his whole face completely. Gone were the weary eyes and the tired face, replacing them was a refreshed young man, looking far more handsome than when I first met him. I mentally slapped myself, ‘what happened to acting aloof Jane?’ I quietly chided myself, ‘you can’t think he’s handsome, or even look at him as more than a stranger!’
“My name is Nicholas by the way.” He said in a low voice, breaking my rant mid-thought.
“I’m Jane, Jane Wright.”
“It’s a pleasure to meet you Jane. And thank you for saving my life, I honestly would be dead if it weren’t for you. You truly must be an angel sent from heaven, I don’t know many other people who would do what you did for a complete stranger—”
“Then you mustn’t know many good people Mr. Nicholas.” I said softly, placing my hand on his arm.
He looked down at his arm before continuing. “Call me Nick, and no I don’t” He said smiling sadly. “But I do know that I now owe you a debt and I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to repay you, but you have my services till I have done so,” he declared, fervently.
