Seventeen years ago, Queen Katie was having a baby girl. At the same time several things were happening . . . one of them being the death of the king as he fought the evil sorceress and dark princess Sasha. In exchange for his life, she promised to spare his kingdom from her army camped outside the walls. They say the baby was born at the same time the father took his last breath.

Meanwhile, in a nameless town in the exact same city, a woman was dying to give life to her own baby girl. The battle was raging outside, but this was of no concern to the mother, for even as she gave birth, the town was flooding. Water was rising inside the house, the town outside being evacuated. However, the mother had a secret. The baby would be safe, she knew, for the father had been a dewdrop. A man made completely of water. This gave her hope as, with her last breath, she begged the nursemaids to save her child.

The two children were born at exactly the same moment, each one taking their first breath and opening their eyes at the very same time. The only difference between the two, really, was the eye color. For while they looked exactly the same in every other aspect - same brown, curly hair, same build, same age - the eyes were different. The first child - Mary - had beautiful brown eyes, full of light and hope. The second child - Brooke - had deep blue eyes, like clear pools of water. They say that the eyes are windows to the soul, and perhaps that is why they were different, though no one really knows.

Brooke and Mary met at ten years old, when Brooke plead for protection from the surrounding kingdoms, for she was a full witch. The queen graciously agreed, on the condition that Brooke would be Mary's servant and personal guard. However, that is not where we start our story. This story begins almost four years later. Both have aged into fine young women, and just in time, too. Both lives are about to change, but whether they will change for the better or the worse, we have yet to find out.
