Bright light overcomes me as I open my eyes and see the iridescent chandelier hanging above my bed. I sit up and look over to my door to see my little sister smiling intently at me. She smiles as she says, "Today is the day of the Reaping."

"Oh, great..." I say under my breath as I get out of my light green sheeted bed and follow the 12 year old girl out and into the kitchen. "Honestly, Velvet, you shouldn't be excited for today at all. You don't have much of a chance to get into the Games anyway." I say nonchalantly and she looks up angrily at me. "Sapphire! What right do you have to say that? You should be excited! I've been excited for this all year!" she replies and sits on the kitchen counter, until a voice orders her down. "Velvet. Get off. We eat on that."

"Mommy! Sapphire is being a dumbass!" Velvet doesn't hesitate to rat me out. I sigh and walk over to the wall with numerous buttons and press a purple one on the lower left. "Riga, could you come out here and make breakfast for us?" Almost instantly a soft voice answers back. "Yes, Ma'am." I look over to my family and see both my sister and mother looking at me with stern looks on their faces.

"Can I help you two girls?" I say sarcastically and walk over to the table and sit on a velvet chair. "Sapphire, I know you're never excited for the Reaping but please just pretend in public for us? District 1 tributes are always ready to fight, and the citizens train their children to fight. If you enter and win, our family will be an honor." my mother says and goes over behind me to stroke my hair. "After breakfast, get ready, okay?" "Okay, Mom." my mother leaves the room and Velvet quickly follows her. As soon as they leave Riga slowly walks in.

Riga is our butler. He is probably the closest I have to a true friend. His messy black hair and stubble on his face makes him look like a funny man. He is one, a good person to talk to, even though he's 37 and I'm 15. "Hi, Riga." I say coldly. He smiles warmly anyway, knowing that I'm in a bad mood because of the Reaping. "Hello, Sapphire." he replies and that's all we say as he starts making breakfast.

"What if I get picked?" I say softly, but loud enough for him to hear. He puts down a plate of food in front of me. Scrambled eggs with cheese, bacon, chopped sausages and orange juice. Mediocre food in a district like this, but who's complaining? I eat quietly as Riga sits across from me and eats a plate too. "Don't die." he says, and that's just enough advice for me to get up, clear my plate, and walk out of the room.
