Around Town

I woke up the next morning to find the house eerily quiet. Usually, my mother would be singing loudly while getting dressed and my father would be yelling into the phone about business deals, but today my ears were ringing with silence.

I glance over at the clock on my bedside table. 10:54. I smile. This is the latest I've slept in weeks. My arms stretch above my head as I yawn, my feet kick the covers onto the floor, and I slide off my queen size bed.

On my way out of the door I grab my iPod. I turn it on and immediately the Friday Night Boys blasts into my ears. I start to sing along.

"Cupid shot me in the eye, so they say that love is blind..." I reach the end of the hall and look out of the window onto the driveway. The only car I see is the Swanson's van. My forest green Jeep is parked in the garage.

By the time I reach the bottom of the stairs I conclude that my parents are at work.

I pad silently into the kitchen and towards the fridge. I pull open the door and grab Mom's "organic" orange juice. I unscrew the cap while turning around.

I choke on the juice when I see a hot guy standing in the doorway. His dark blonde hair reminds me of tarnished gold. I start coughing when I realize that he has only boxers on. Well, that answers that question.

I set the juice down on the counter, take out my earbuds, and grab a handtowel to clean off my shirt.

"Who the hell are you?" I ask as I take in his eight pack, sexy bed head, and striking electric blue eyes.

He looks at me like a little kid who has just gotten caught stealing cookies. He rubs the back of his neck which accentuates his wonderful pecs and biceps.

"Uh..." he replies. "Hi, um, I'm Jake Swanson." His voice is soft and smooth.

I instantly stop my ogling when I realize what he said. "Oh." I mumble. I grab the juice and roughly put it back in the fridge. My ear buds go back into my ears, and I push past Jake who stands there in shock at my reaction.

After I sprint up the stairs and nearly knock a priceless vase off an equally priceless pedestal, I reach my room. I see an envelope taped to my door. I rip it down, stomp into my room, and slam the door behind me. I tear open the envelope and take the note from inside. I begin to read,

Your mother and I took the kids to the beach. Jake would't wake up so he is still at home with you. Be nice and show him around town. Don't forget to introduce him to Marcus and Tamisha. That is your job for today.

                                                                          Love, Dad <3

I sigh and place the note on my desk. He made it sound like I am a slave tour guide.

I shrug. At least I'll get some surfing in today.

I grab my surfing shorst and a dark blue tank top out of my dresser. I pull these on over my graffiti swim suit and grab my favorite grey flip flops before walking back to the kitchen.

I see Jake standing next to the sink finishing off a bowl of cornflakes. I notice that he has pulled on some sweatpants since I last saw him. I cough lightly to get his attention.

He looks up at me and smiles before turning back to his bowl.

I sigh. "I am your tour guide. You have thirty minutes before we leave," I say. I walk into the den to wait.

I flop down on my chair and turn on our HD-TV. A rerun of "Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives" is on. I watch some awesome food be made while I wait for Jake to be ready.

Twenty miutes later I hear Jake walking down the stairs. I reluctantly turn off the TV in the middle of some turkey being smoked. I get up and wait by the front door.

He rounds the corner. I open the door and walk through. I tromp across the yard to the garage. I hear him close the door and follow me.

I get in my Jeep and back out of the garage. I wait for him to get in before driving towards town.

We have been driving for five minutes before Jake speaks up. "Where are we going?"

I look over at him and get distracted. The morning sunlight burns through his golden hair and rakes over his prominent features. I shake my head and turn back to the road.

"Shit!" I slam on the brakes. I barely stop a few inches from the car in front of me.

"Distracted much?" I am shocked by his comment and the smirk that accompanies it. Earlier he had seemed like one of those nice guys. He is obviously cockier.

"Not at all. I just got to thinking about a guy I met last week." This shuts him up. I smile. The light turns green and I drive down Main St.

I pass all the stores and head straight to the beach. My phone buzzes when I park.
