Chapter 3

I get out of my Jeep and grab the board from the roof.

“What are we doing?” Jake asks me. He is still smiling a little. Grr.

“Well, I am going to surf while you sit on the beach like a good little boy.” I reach up and pat his hair. Yup, silky smooth.

He growls at me. I laugh and walk towards the beach where Marcus and Tamisha are waiting for me. Tamisha runs up to me and grabs me in a hug.

“I missed you so much!” she screams into my ear. She has separation issues.

“I just saw you last night,” I reply, trying to get out of her death-grip hug. She squeezes me until Marcus pulls her off.

“I know! It’s been nineteen hours! Anyway, I heard there are some new surfers in town. Want to check out their skills?” She leans in and whispers, “And their abs?” I laugh and push her away.

“Of course,” I tell her. “Marcus, Tamisha and I are going to go down the beach. Would you mind showing Jake around?” I grab Tamisha’s hand and pull her away from the guys.

I hear Jake ask Marcus, “Why do I feel like I just got socked in the face?” Marcus laughs and replies, “Kylie has that effect.” Wow! Am I really that cool?

Tamisha guides me to where the big waves are. Some locals are surfing the largest waves. I see five new guys shredding the waves also.

“The one with the black hair is coming to our school in the fall,” Tamisha points out. “They say he is better than you.”

I grit my teeth. “Hell no.” I remove my tank top and strap my board to my ankle. “See you later,” I tell her and run towards the waves.

I splash through the water. Once it reaches my knees, I lie on my board and begin paddling. I push past the waves until I am in my golden zone. From here I can make almost every wave.

I see the dark-haired guy waiting a few feet to my right. I see a swell and start paddling. At the perfect moment I stand. I drop into the wave and begin to surf. I whip my board back and forth. I do a few tricks and sigh as my wave runs out.

Tamisha is cheering me onshore. I ride a few more waves before returning to her. Marcus and Jake are waiting with her.

“That was awesome!” She screams and hugs me. I smile. Today’s waves are great. They have some pretty constant rhythm.

Marcus holds out his fist and I bump it. “Totally rad!” I laugh. Marcus likes to make fun of stereotypical surfers.

I turn to Jake. “Well?” I ask.

He just looks at me. He turns and walks away towards the concession stand. He buys some food and returns.

“Hot dog?” He offers me one with sweet relish and sauerkraut. My eyes widen. He got it on his first try.

“Hell, yeah!” I grab the hot dog and basically destroy it. It’s down my throat in less than ten seconds. He offers me his soda and I chug half of it. Surfing burns a ton of calories. I will take this as an apology for almost making me crash.

“You’re pretty good.” I hear a voice say over my shoulder. I grab a napkin from Jake and wipe my face.

“Thanks,” I say turning around. The dark haired surfer is standing behind me.

“You also eat like a man,” he states. I hear Tamisha giggle behind me. I roll my eyes.

“Why is that always what new surfers say to me?” I ask Tamisha. She considers a few seconds before answering. “Because you’re always eating when they arrive.” I glare at her.

Marcus pipes up, “It’s true! You are always eating when you are not surfing. Plus it doesn’t help that you have a fast metabolism.”

“Wow, Marcus! You said a big word,” I mumble under my breath. Dark haired dude laughs. Apparently I wasn’t quiet enough.

“See you around, Kylie.” He says and walks off. I watch him leave. Tamisha is right; the new surfers do have nice bodies.

“Wait,” Jake says, “How did he know your name?” That’s a good question. I look over at Marcus. He usually hangs around the Spots more than I do.

“Never met him,” he says. Marcus grabs his board and heads out to sea.
