Chapter 3

I woke up with a sharp pain in my stomach, like a monster clawing from my inside, determined to escape. When my lifted my eyes, only a little part of the area lifted with it, then the rest followed. As I moved my feet to slide off the bed, my head started to pound crazily and my eyes dizzy, so I fell to the wooden floor. I could hear Harper jumping off the top bunk and telling the girls to stay calm, but I wasn't. A gut-wrenching sensation filled my throat and raised up to my mouth, a horrid, disgusting taste. I tried to keep it in, but it was too much, so I spat out the awful feeling against my cheeks and looked down to see just blood and water mixed together with chicken and bits of food. I fell to my side, groaning from the horrible squeezing from my stomach.
"Rosemary, what in the name of the devil is happening to you?" she cried, her voice echoing in my ears.
I tried to reply but a moan just escaped my lips. I looked up at her, her face wrinkled with worry. I could feel my body quivering as I competed to speak.
"N-no.....food...." I murmured.
She gasped and turned my flailing body to face her. "I thought you were turning into one of those sickos!"
I coughed up more goop again, crying from the flavor and agony of my body. I could hear the faints yells of Harper as she banged on the iron door that was locked from us getting into the hallways. She was screaming and gulping tears down at the same time. Why is she crying? She barely knows me... Then I heard the door click open and Harper explaining what happened with me. I felt cold hands touch my pale skin, picking up my slacked body. Then I fainted out to a fade light in the distance.

The grass swayed at my brown sneakers, summoning towards a small light in the distance. As I focused my blurry eyes on the picture I noticed three figures I knew very well. My eyes widen with aghast and I longed to see them. My mother stood at the breeze, her softening eyes cooling to my gaze. Her dress pulling out in the sky, her long arm wrapped around my young sister's shoulders. Her bright smile warmed my heart and round eyes calmed me. Then next to them was a man, his brownish hair tugging away from his head from the wind. He had a thin smile and black eyes that shown no pupil like Mom's. My heart beat fast and my smile stretched across my face, pleased to see my family again.
"I miss you," I whispered softly that seemed to carry with the breeze to my family's straining ears.
I went to run into their arms but every time I made a step they just moved farther away. My smile drifted away into a frown as I made a scowl. I started to run faster, now sprinting across the field. But once I was actually running towards them, they started to fade away from my touch. I screamed, tears falling down my burning cheeks. When I reached them, they turned to ashes and floated off into the sunlight, leaving me to touch the now still air.
"No, don't leave me! You can't leave me!" my sheirks repeated in the empty tarrien. "Please! don't leave me!"
I dropped to my knees, burying my face in my hands. "Dont...leave me."

I woke up with a startle, dry tears melted into my glossed skin. I was back in my bunk bed; I could taste the juices from a fresh apple and the tang of skim milk. Harper was sitting next to me with a perturbed face. She was holding my hand tight, her eyes gleaming with water.
"Why were you crying?" I barely whispered.
She started to laugh, her shoulders bouncing along with her voice. She leaned her head back to continue laughing, her chest heaving fast.
"What?"
She just continued to laugh. I wrinkled my nose up and decided not to question it. I laid my head back down in the seeping pillow, thinking of the dream I had. Mother, sister, and father. If you can hear me, why did you disappear? Why was that your fate?
"I am tired of losing people. I couldn't have you die in the middle of my watch. I can't let anyone get sick, I can't watch it...." she turned to me, her eyes dilating.
Her full lips were bleeding with stress and her teeth grinded. I gave out a soft smile and laid my head back down.
"Lunch will be soon." she murmured.
"Good. I don't want to be sick again." I giggled.
The bed lightened, alarming me that Harper has left. I heard the soft whispers and gossip from the kids as their glance burning my skin. I turned my head to stare at them and they all looked away, abashed.
I closed my eyes in discomfort and drifted off to sleep again, hoping the dream that haunted me earlier would not return.
