Two weeks later Amanda stood in the cemetery as Kate and Michelle were laid to rest, their dark wooden caskets gleaming in the sunlight as they were lowered into the ground. The sound of a throat being cleared behind her pulled her from her musings as her uncle stepped up beside her.
“Well?”
Amanda sighed heavily.
“She didn’t really know what was going on. She was attacked coming home from my party, and I couldn’t save her,” the tightness in her throat was threatening to choke her but she continued. “Her last words were ‘I’m sorry.’ But I’m the one who let Michelle die. This, all of this, is my fault.”
For a moment they stood in silence before he let out a deep breath and placed a large hand on her shoulder.
“I’m sorry, Amanda. But you did the right thing, she would have killed you or possibly someone else if you hadn’t stepped in.”
“What about the creature that started this?”
He rubbed a tired hand over his eyes and reached into his pocket for his notebook.
“It looks like he skipped town. There have been no more suspicious deaths that weren’t caused by Kate.” He hesitated before continuing in a grave voice. “There are some leads, but it will take some time. You didn’t tell anyone else the truth about this, did you?”
“No. I thought it best if this was kept in house. I gave the police a vague description of a masked man with a knife and a gun.”
He nodded as if he already knew the answer and moved to leave.
“Alright. Let me know if anything else comes up.”
Amanda nodded bleakly and stared at the open graves.
