Chapter 8: We Have to Do Something

Bryan

"You should've seen him Cal; he was out of control. He had her in tears before I could even get to her" I seethed. Cal and I were in the barn mucking stalls.

"Tell me again what happened" Cal asked. I had told him the story at least three times already; it was like he didn't believe it.

"Samantha and I got in the truck with Nic. He starts asking her why she smells like you, basically calling her a slut and before I was even belted in he hauls her from the back into the front and rips her shirt off her shoulder. When i got her from him she was crying hysterically. The think that keeps getting to me is that I don't think is sorry at all" I grit the story out through my teeth.

"Did you get her calmed down?"

"Is that all you are going to Say about Nic's behavior?" I yelled. Cal was the oldest brother, when dad wasn't around it is his job to enforce the rules and morals that we have been taught all our lives.

"No that isn't all I'm going to say about his behavior; that is all I'm going to say about his behavior to you. I just want to know if she is okay now or if something still needs to be done on her side of things" Cal snapped back at me. I cringed at his words. He was right, Nic would get what he deserved but We should be making sure that Samantha was OK.

"I think she is OK now. I got her to stop crying and she is asleep in her room right now" I was really hoping that there was nothing else she needed because I didn't know what else to do.

"I'm guessing I'll still need to go talk to her" the frustration in Cal's voice was evident; he hated having to deal with other people's emotions, hell he didn't even like dealing with other people in general.

"It might be a good idea. She knows that Nic hates her, it might help if she know that more of us are at least OK with her being here than hate her" I reasoned.

"I'll talk to her. By the way dad had to go into town for a meeting; he'll be back in a few days so let's fix this before he gets back" Cal's voice was one of confidence and calm. He was in control of the situations and that cooled my anger towards Nic. Cal would fix everything and before dad got home from Billings.

Samantha

"Samantha Elizabeth Huntington, how could you?" my father's voice scolded from behind me. I sprang to my feet and fumbled into the correct standing position. I had not heard him coming up the stairs. As I stared at the floor I realized it was not the hard wood floor of Huntington Manor but the soft carpet of the Simons' home. Dread filled me as I came to accept that they had found me.

"Nothing to say for yourself young lady?" my fathers tone never wavered from the cold hard tenor that i had grown up with. I had learned a long time ago that it was always better to apologize but if you could not form a proper apology then it was better to say nothing at all. The silence lengthened and I knew he was waiting.

"I will deal with this when we get home. Your mother is waiting in Boston; she is trying to cover this up for you. If she does not succeed you know that your reputation will forever be tarnished. If that happens no amount of influence from your mother or I will be able to find you a husband unless he is will to over look it" there was no disappointment in his voice to let me know that he cared, at least a little. I watched as he turned on his heels and left the bedroom and i hurried to follow. He led me all the way through the house and out to the front lawn where a black town car was waiting.

"I assume that you are capable of sending my daughter's belongings back to us?" my father snipped backed towards the house before he got into the car. My eyes flashed up to see who he was talking to. James stood on the porch with Bryan, neither looked please. A window opening on the second floor torn my attention from then. Nicholas was leaning out the window of the room I was staying.

"I'll have it all packed up and shipped out by the end of the week. Thanks for coming to pick her up" the smile on Nicholas's face was genuine and saddening.

"Thank you for the call Nicholas. My wife and I appreciate the return of our rebellious daughter" my father gestured for me to get in the car. I climbed in and slid over to make room for him. His door shut with a slam and he turned to me.

"When we arrive at the manor you will pack your clothes and prepare to leave for boarding school. Your mother and I have tried everything to help you and to turn you into a proper lady but you are just too much. The boarding school will fix that for us" with the final blow to my soul he turned face the front. The remainder of the car ride to the airport was complete silence. Security and boarding of the plane was the same. Silence, silence and more silence. As I sat in my first class seat, I closed my eyes and prayed. Sleep over took me soon after.

Caleb

While I did plan on talking to both Nic and the girl, I wasn't about to do it right now. I climbed into my truck and began the drive into the small town we called our own. Lavina only had just over 200 residence and everyone knew everyone. We didn't even have a school and had to drive to the school we shared with Belmont.

I climbed out of the truck and made my way into Jenny's Diner. Jenny was a widow that moved here after her husband died. She was a god sent to many of us single guys. She not only ran the diner but often would cook us meals or send us home with 'leftover' sweet tea.

"Cal honey! I didn't figure I'd be seeing you for another week at least. Those brothers of yours already drink all of my tea?" Jenny greeted me with a hug and a cheek kiss, even though I did have to bend for her to reach.

"No, I actually came in for a piece of that apple pie of yours and maybe some advice" I chuckled. Jenny could make a great white shark smile, which according to some of the local girls I was in fact scarier than.

"Of course honey. Come on up to the counter and we can take care of both those things" Jenny grabbed my arm and lead me to the counter. Jenny always reminded me of a fairy, other than the fact that she was small but she was always cheerfully flitting from one customer to the next.

"What's on your mind dear?" the aroma of pie filled my nostrils as Jenny set the pie in front of me and herself in the seat next to me.

"There is this girl-"

"Has the solitary Cal finally found his mate?! Tell me about her!" The squeal that came from Jenny not only made me cringe but seemed ridiculous coming from a woman in her late forties.

"Jenny, let me finish"

"So you didn't find your mate?" the disappointment on her face as she spoke was that of a child that had been told they couldn't have ice cream after dinner.

"Let me start over; from the beginning. The other day my dad got a call from Alvin and-"

"Alvin! Alvin Kane? I haven't heard a word about him in years. How is Alvin doing?" Jenny interrupted again. I had a feeling that this conversation was going to take a while.

"Yes, Alvin Kane. No I don't know how he is doing. Can I continue?" will it may seem rude Jenny knew I was mostly joking. She waved her hand in front of us, gesturing for me to continue.

"As I was saying. The other day my dad got a call from Alvin Kane asking if dad could do him a favor. So yesterday dad tells us that Alvin has been working for this weathy family as a driver but more of a nanny for their daughter. Well I guess something happened and the girl doesn't feel like the could live there anymore and Alvin wanted us to take her in. Dad said he had already agreed and that he was just letting us know that she was going to be at the house when we were all done with our work for the day. Nic doesn't seem to like her at all. He is actually quite cruel to her; it isn't like him at all. I just don't know how to deal with her. Bry says someone needs to let her know that she is welcome here even if Nic doesn't make it seem like it but i don't know how to do that." I could tell that it had tken alot for Jenny to not interupt me. She had been squirming in her seat before I had even gotten to my problem. It was the smile that was currently on her face that had me worried though. She had a plan and I had a feeling that it wasn't I would like.

"I know exactly what you should do!" Jenny exclaimed as I groaned.
