Chapter 6: Twisted Sister

Bryan

My body felt relaxed and streeched in a way that only a run leaves me. Nic had been right; I felt a ton better and he was even nice enough to leave me a change of clothes in the barn. I know i shouldn't of let the dead calf get to me but the herd was my responsibility.  My dad had given me that herd for my fourteenth birthday. I mean Nic had a point at least it was a natural lion. i just can't let myself get riled up like that again; especially with the girl here. Dad would have head if she saw us before he could tell her.

I could smell the roast as i entered the kitchen and headed to the dining room. Cal and my dad were already sitting at the table. i could hear Nic coming down the stairs and the new girl moving around upstairs.

"She's coming" Nic growled as he entered the dining room. He flopped down into his seat.

"Lost a calf last night," I admitted as I took my seat. Dad looked up at me, clearly wanting me to explain further.

"I went to bring the cattle in from the south pasture into the corral but i was one car short, found Sally about fifty feet into the woods standing over a torn up calf. Looks like a lion got to it but it was a newborn calf. must of been born and killed last night, so i wasn't missing it this morning when I did count" I explained. Dad simply nodded his head.

"Is she going to come down? I'm hungry" Cal grunted.

"I guess we can start without her. She might be too tired to come down and eat tonight" dad reasoned calmly as he began to fill his plate. We kept a steady conversation of ranch talk as we dished out the roast and began to eat it. we all looked up as we heard footsteps coming down the stairs and watched as the girl entered. I was a little surprised by the head of red haior that she was sporting but that was quickley over shadowed by the formal clothes she seemed to be wearing.Dad waved her over to the seat inbetween himself and Cal. She looked uncomfortable but I couldn't blame her. If Nic was looking at me the way he was looking at her I wouldn't want to be in the same room for longer than I had to be. She placed some roast on her plate as dad resumed our conversation about the ranch.

She seemed to pick at her food; placing small bites of roast in her moouth and chewing extremely slowly. her face remained emotionless as she continued to feed herself. I wasn't the only one to notice because the conversation came to a stop and we all watched her eat.

"Is there something wrong with the food Samantha?" ask dad. Her face shot up to look at dad but quickly dropped back down to her plate as she answered.

"No Sir. The food is delicious" she smiled as she took another bite but it still didn't look right.

"You're eating weird" I blurted.

“Bryan Anthony Simons that is rude. Just because you have no manners doesn’t mean that Samantha can’t use proper manner” dad scolded. He used my full name to let me know he was serious but I could tell he wasn't mad.

“Dad, I was just saying. I don’t give a flying cow how she eats, I was just saying” I defended myself. I didn't want her to think that I was trying to be rude, I was just making an observation. I looked at her as she gasped, I could see the look of fear in her eyes as she looked at my dad.

"What is your problem?" growled Nic. What was HIS problem? I can't undersand how she has been here less than twenty-four hours and already had Nic hating her somthing strong.

“Nicholas Gabriel Simons apologize, take you plate to another room and eat there. Samantha is a guest in our home. While it is clear that she is use to a more formal family relationship that includes manners does not mean that you can act anyway you choose. Not only will I not stand for her to be treated poorly because she is now family but I would not allow you to talk to anyone in the manner you just did. Now go” this time dad was mad. I agreed with dad but I knew that Nic was just going to blame Samantha for his attitude.
