Chapter 4~ The Out of Reach Car and a Kick-Ass Movie

I grabbed my things from the locker the school had assigned me and took off to meet Carol for a ride home. When I got out there she was talking to Kristi, Makayla, and the twins and bouncing up and down. "Oh great, I bet they got her a tryout for the cheerleaders." Sure enough, when I get over there:

"Hey, Valarie, you're gonna have to walk home today. The girls got me a tryout and I won't have time to drive you home."

"But mom said-"

"I already talked to mom and she said it would be good for you to walk somewhere for once" she stated in an off-hand manner, so with that I trudged of to the other side of the parking lot and to the exit. "Wow, what great parents, they send their daughter through Manhattan, New York alone. Really smart." I thought, groaning from the effort. "I swear this is 2 miles long."  I got about halfway across the lot before I said 'screw it' and looked around for a car to hot wire.

If there were two things my family could say they were confident I could do, it was cooking and working on cars. Everything from body work, to engines, to wheels, to carburetors, to how to jimmy and hot wire a car if I lost the key. I was pretty good with cars. My dad, before he died, made this whole book of everything he wanted to teach me. The night before he died he gave the book to my brother for safe keeping. Marcus was 6 at the time and I was 2, Carol is our half-sister, but she's a year older than me.

They said our dad died from a bear mauling, but Marcus and I don't believe that. The claw and teeth marks are too much like a dogs', yet still too big for a wolf. Anyway, one of the biggest things he wanted to teach me about was cars. So Marcus has been doing it for him, he's made sure I know everything there is to know about cars. He's taught me everything in that book and he gave it to me for my 10th birthday.

Just as I spotted the perfect car: a 1988 onyx black Cadillac with 10 inch wheels and tinted windows- when a 1969 Dodge Charger that looked like The General Lee* pulled up and started rolling down the passenger side window. "You have GOT to be kidding me."

Just as they finished rolling down the window I screamed "Hey, Luke! Where's Bo?" and my laughter ceased just in time to see Devan shaking his head at my reference.

"He's driving and Daisy's in the back" Devan retorted before cutting to the chase. "We thought you'd like a ride, rather than walking home."

"How would you know I was walking? What? Are you stalking me now?" I snorted, how true it was that I was being stalked, but not by them.

"Naw, we just saw you stalking across the parking lot when your sister's car is the other way" Carmen decided to lean up from the back seat and pipe in.

"Hey, Daisy. Yeah, I'd love a ride" I accepted. I mean, it can't be that bad if Carmen's in the car. Can it?

"Haha, I prefer Margarita" She replies sarcastically.

"You like being called an alcoholic beverage?" I asked, playing dumb. I knew this meant daisy in English, I hadn't become multi-lingual for nothing. I was quite fluent in Spanish, German, Russian, Gaelic, Italian, French, Latin, and Romanian.

"Wow, either you're incompetent at Spanish or you're just playing dumb" Carmen stared at me in disbelief.

"Guess I just don't know Spanish" I shrugged with indifference.

"Okay… Hey, Devan, hop out so Val can get in" and with that Devan started pulling himself out of the window. "You have got to be joking" I thought as I examined the door more closely. "They actually welded the doors shut." I couldn't decide if it was more ridiculous or awesome that they actually got authentic with it. I couldn't wait to hop in. I straightened my Aperture Laboratories hoodie, grabbed the roof of the car, stepped up onto the window frame, and slid in to the passenger seat.

When I looked over to the driver's side my laughing died out. "Shit." Calvin was smirking at me with his eyebrow raised. "Can't I catch a break from this guy?"

"Hey, Babe" was his clever line. I've got a great one made special, just for him.

"Hey, Eddie. When did they start allowing Munsters to get licenses?" I asked with a triumphant smirk of my own. Calvin's smirk turned to a scowl, while Carmen started snort-laughing in the backseat.

"Shut up, Daisy and scoot over" Carmen's snickering vanishes and with a death glare to me, she slid over. I then proceeded to climb into the backseat, until I felt someone smack my ass. I paused for a beat, but then decided to let it go. I didn't want to fight the whole way home.

Carmen talked the whole way home. Then, all of a sudden-

"Hey, we're going to a movie tonight. Do you, maybe, wanna come?"

"Uhhhhhhhhh, what movie?" I had to ask. I'm not just going to go to a movie and not know what it was. I mean, what if it ended up being Attack of the Fluffy Puppies? That would be horrible.

"Kick-Ass. It's supposed to be freaking awesome." Devan looked like he couldn't contain himself, he was so excited.

"Fine I suppose that I can come. It probably won't be any fun without me."

Up in the front seat, Calvin snorted, then proceeded to ask me what my address was.

"1327 East 13th Street and 4th Avenue." Yeah, I lived in a rich part of the city. What? My "parents" have a thing for flair. Calvin practically choked, Devan spewed the water he was drinking, and Carmen gave me this "shut up" look. All of a sudden they all smirked at each other and nodded.

"Okay, we'll pick you up at 6:30. We have to stop at a few places first. Just wait on the side walk for us." Carmen said a suspiciously.

"Okay…?" I'm pretty sure that I don't want to ask.

About 20 minutes later we pulled up to my "house"-it was more like a mansion really- and Devan climbed out of the window so that I could get out. I ran up the stairs and proceeded to take a shower and get ready for the movie.
